Have you ever had a thing you knew you had to do, at no specific time, perhaps before some seemingly-distant limit (4 months from now, 6 months from now, etc)?
Have you ever totally forgotten about it for a while?
Have you ever then had someone casually remind you of it? And in that instant, got a sense of panic? Oh crap, how long has it been? How much time is there left to do it? I better get on it right now before I totally forget again.
So you got up and immediately went to do it?
And the person who reminded you went, “Oh no no, you don’t have to do it right now!”
To which you could only respond, “Yes. Yes, I do have to do it right now. If I don’t do it now, I never will.” ?
Erryday.
So you got up and immediately went to do it?
Only in Christmas Land
I can recite the opening paragraph of every magic treehouse book
lyrics to songs I have accidentally memorized, or: an embarassing peek into the weird music I listen to
scrolling through my music playlist…
there’s a lot more but due to running out of energy I will not be adding more
edit: I spent 40 minutes writing this lol
notably for the ‘wrong norm’ song, the memorized lyrics matches the captions for the video surprisingly well, ‘ar-ter-ries’
those probably overwrote my existing idea of the lyrics at some point
Hardware store is such a fucking banger.
That feel when you can’t remember where you put a thing that you specifically put away to not lose it, but you can remember the exact location down to the millimeter of a thing you saw once a month ago.
Putting things back exactly where they were after moving them to clean a counter - easy
Putting things in a new, more sensible location (sometimes in a good-faith attempt to make a habit out of it) - nearly impossible
I feel like, for me (AuDHD), this goes along with:
Being able to remember the exact location of a place you went to once
vs
Being able to predict the edge of the doorway when leaving the bedroom you go in and out of every dayThis is why I leave things laying around. I see things almost daily so when I need them I know exactly where they are. Once I organize them? Gone forever until I say “oh I wonder what’s in this drawer.”
That’s why strict organization rules and mother-fucking-labels-on-every-motherfucking-thing is required.
Hahah
I can give you a valid Windows 95 key by memory, but I need to re-read the second half of a 6-digit 2FA token while entering it.
I’m lucky to retain those first 3 digits at all.
I’ve long wondered if ADHD has a major working memory dysfunction as a driver. I know from testing that I have zero working memory (what most people know as short-term memory).
I have the muscle memory to input GTA3, Vice City, and San Andreas cheat codes, but only with a controller in my hand. I could not write it down or verbally tell you what they were.
Oh hey, that’s me with my ATM PIN! If someone demanded I tell them my PIN, they’d think I’m playing dumb. It takes time to recall what numbers I use, and in order to do that, I have to first visualize the keypad and where my fingers would go. But if they put me in front of the machine, my fingers will know what to type. They never forget.
I also think of time in a visual way. Analog clocks are the best clocks for me, they help me comprehend time intervals immediately. If I see a digital clock, it’s easier for me to visualize the way it would be portrayed on an analog face than for me to make much meaningful use of a string of numbers.
… I suspect I may have a touch of dyscalculia (though I do have a strong number sense, there’s just something about numerals that trips me up across the board.)
Hey same!! Analog clocks just make sense to me, it gives me a visual representation of time chunks. Though I have ADHD I’ve always been an on time person (generally!) since I can look at the clock and figure out when I need to leave. With the PIN thing, I have to do shapes, won’t remember the numbers. I can’t even remember a whole phone number, I have no idea what my husband or daughter’s phone numbers are.
I’ve also thought I have dyscalculia though analog clocks are supposed to be hard if you have it.
L1 R1 ABXY UP DOWN LEFT RIGHT UP DOWN LEFT RIGHT.
Now let me go google and see if I successfully got myself some weapons…
Edit: Damn well RIP gamewinners.com. That hurts my heart.
Also I was close enough for “haven’t played that game since like 2005”:
R, Black, L, Black, Left, Down, Right, Up, Left, Down, Right, Up
Definitely the memory. A colleague is a constant cockwaffle about the fact that I can remember lyrics to songs and details about books I read but don’t remember a specification delivered in passing conversation. They know it’ll be fine if they write it down or record it, but it’s just so much easier to be a twat about it instead.
Just tell him “hey shitass, I’ve listened to this song every day for X years, and you mentioned your bullshit once. Of course I remember that and not your blathering.”
I don’t get people like that cockwaffle’s logic, like, do you think I remember those lyrics after one listen?
I literally cannot recall the words that just came out of my own mouth
This happens to me pretty regularly. I’ve been waxing philosophical a lot as of late and I’ll hit on a really succinct way of phrasing something and my friend will stop and ask me to repeat the way I had just phrased it. It can sometimes take a good 10-15 seconds to try and figure it out, if I can at all.
I remember 68954012663. No idea what the rest of the lyrics are.
Did you know they made a magic treehouse anime?
