  • Do you miss the part where it’s an open rebuttal of the over commercialization of Christmas? Instead of wasting a bunch of time putting up decorations bought simply to fill some billionaires pockets, I’ll put up a steel pole.

Also you’re missing the Airing of Grievances as well. Thats integral. The family fight is gonna happen regardless, so might as well get some therapy out of it and bury the axes while you’re at it. The Feats of Strength will get rid of whatever animosity is left too.

Oh, I’m sorry, did you grow up in a normal, functional family?

Yeah. It would have been depressing if the name was only on the tattoo and he was saying the wrong name. Maybe make him old as well to imply dementia. Hell, make it a cat tattoo and have him specify “You weren’t a good boy, but the best boy” to imply a dog and really drive it home.

I dunno. Just spitballin’. But I agree, as it stands, it’s more sentimental than sad.

Thank you for your comment. I thought of Hyperbole when I was writing mine. I have the same feeling about how they handled their struggles in a much healthier and constructive way. I’ve sent people their post on depression before to help explain my own feelings. I’m glad to know it resonated with others as well.

Campbell left a really bad taste in my mouth. It’s one of the few times I’ve been successfully able to completely sever the art and artist. I love the work, but kinda deplore Campbell. I don’t really want to give them any credit because they don’t even want it themselves.

I’m really torn on this one. They were a great comic that reached a lot of people and then the creator went on all these rants about not really being depressed and it was all a show(and I swear they then retracted that but Wikipedia doesn’t seem to have that part listed). Then they burned their books and swore off creating and wanted everything removed. But then the book burning was even staged…

For someone who claimed it was all an act, it sure seemed like coming clean was a mental breakdown in itself to me. Like they had imposter syndrome, but then the irony was yeah, you are as dysfunctional as you “pretended” to be and just demonstrated it to everyone. There was no imposter.

That’s all to say I wish they’d kept creating and hadn’t left like that. Hadn’t basically said “this all sucks and shouldn’t exist”. But oddly, it is fitting. I’ll give them that. Viewed as a whole, it’s almost poetic.

ETA: I found a summary of the drama that included a mention of them retracting their claim of being depressed. I swear it was blog post called something like “I lied about lying about having depression”, a follow up to “I lied about having depression”. In the second post they claimed coming out as not depressed was in itself fake and I believe part of some art piece/experiment. The OP of the linked post adds a few details I’d missed. I don’t disagree with their posit that it was all an art project and Campbell isn’t a real person. I’ve certainly considered something similar in the past.

ETA2: Found an even better writeup with some more current details. There’s this gem tho:

Two days later, Veil posted again: “I’VE BEEN PRETENDING TO BE PRETENDING TO HAVE DEPRESSION FOR PROFIT AND I’M SORRY.” A day later: “IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PRETEND TO DO OR SAY ANYTHING AND MY COMICS HAVE NEVER BEEN ABOUT DEPRESSION.”

  • The issue is, every time we make a great leap in storage medium, we tend to use that new storage for BIGGER files. Higher quality media and all that. Back in the day, the average movie file was measured in the MB. Now it’s GB. Think about an old floppy with 1.4 MB of data and how many text files you stored on it. You couldn’t ever imagine needing more space. Then came pictures and music files. Video files. Then higher resolution picture and video files. Suddenly even your text documents aren’t just raw .txt files, but Word documents and interactive PDFs.

As storage improves, what we expect to be able to carry around with us or have in our home computer changes. I’m currently running a home server with 18TB of storage. An amount that I would have never dreamed of possessing 20 years ago, and yet here I am debating when I grab that 24TB drive because I can already see me running out of space in a few months.

This is all to say that I really don’t think there will ever be a maximum amount a user could need. Give them that maximum and in a week they’ll have figured out a way to use it to capacity. I think video games and cartridge/disk size limitations and then the transition to digital games and balloning game size shows my point.

  • I see your logic and had the same thought, but then wouldn’t a “No stopping at anytime”/“No parking” sign accomplish the same thing? “No Loitering” sign as well. If the point is for the cop to be able to point to a sign, those already exist and are much more broad and easy to use(or misuse, depending on your perspective). Like others said, an absolute minimum speed limit seems destined to harm pedestrians. Plus, you can see it’s before a stoplight. So not even logical.

I’m betting this is a fake sign.

Way to miss the point. It’s about some people acting like these are choices rather than “this is the best I can do”. Would you really prefer the inconsistency of the gig economy if well paying consistent jobs were available? Would you eat rice and beans for every meal if you actually had the choice? Wouldn’t you prefer just a few more square feet in your tiny home(maybe in the kitchen or bathroom)?

Acting like people are making all of these choices out of genuine desire and not a good helping of “this is what I have to do to survive” is what the meme is criticizing and what you on your high horse up there failed to see.

  • That’s why I think the final iteration of the fediverse will be a mostly defederated bunch of echochamber bubbles. People don’t actually want diverse opinions. They want a diverse group of people to share their opinion so that they can feel theirs is the dominant, right one. Give it 5 years and the fediverse will be just as much walled off and divided as the rest of the internet is now.

People like to complain about the evil’s of humanity and yet always seem to act like it’s forced upon us by some outside force. Like the 1% are a different species and not just glowing examples of our worst traits cranked up to max. Like someone else is making humanity act this way. But nah, it’s just us and our nature. And until we understand and address that properly, none of our problems are going anywhere.
