Explanation: While the Romans were very fond of reading omens into events, especially after the fact, Julius Caesar’s assassination was probably not entirely unexpected, even by Caesar. By legend, he was warned by a seer, his wife had a prophetic dream, and he himself noticed some of his old enemies talking in furtive and hushed tones when they thought he wasn’t looking.

Now, while we may not place much weight in such things today, they make sense as a broader atmosphere of tension from a conspiracy which was both large and not particularly disciplined. In that sense, religious figures friendly to Caesar warning him of trouble approaching, and his wife feeling nervous after weeks of talk about the town, are not warnings to be dismissed lightly.

Ultimately, Caesar’s toxic masculinity killed him. He, in order to soothe the anxiety of his wife, Calpurnia, agreed to stay home from the Senate on the day of his assassination… but one of the conspiring Senators came to his house, and when he found out why Caesar’s wasn’t attending, asked him if he was really going to let a WOMAN’S fears dictate HIS actions?

He went to the meeting place of the Senate that day, and was promptly assassinated.

    … should’ve listened to his wife. ¯\(ツ)

Calprunia: A lioness hath whelped in the streets,
Graves hath yawned and yielded up their dead.
(aka: Yo hubs, maybe take a sick day today)

Caesar: Yeah, that actually sounds like it might not be a bad–

Cassius: Yo dawg, Imma let you finish, but bitches be crazy, amirite?
Let’s head down to the senate. I’m sure there aren’t a ton of knives waiting there.

Ultimately, Caesar’s toxic masculinity killed him.

Why do you need to be so gender specific here? Woman (and kids) want to appear strong too, that is not a male-only thing. I would also argue that it is not something toxic, just a behavior many people show. I would even say most humans want to appear in a positive (and non-negative as well) way around their peers and change their behavior accordingly.

        what

The argument was expressed in explicitly gendered terms - that Caesar, a man, should not be directed by the fears of his wife, a woman.

That goes both ways. When a leader gives every indication that they’re going to be a dictator, then says they will be, don’t be surprised when they become a dictator.

Leader: “I’m going to become a king!”
Person 1: “Guys i think he might intend to become a king”
Person 2: “Oh stop listening to cicerian propaganda, he doesn’t want to be king! He just wants to make our lives better!”

Cut to collage of the leader’s GOLDEN FUCKING TOWER NAMED AFTER THEMSELF
