I think memory management on modern phones is good enough that running apps in the background is no longer an issue. Provided you’re not using a piece of shit.

Or maybe it’s just the ‘we’ that’s going to be out of the equation, which is fine too I guess. Our particular form of life just isn’t that important in the grand scheme of things anyway.
They were all right though, if by ‘the world’ you mean ‘the world as we know it’.
Battery swelling caused the display to detach or crack, exposing the user to sharp fragments. Buried a couple paragraphs in, behind terms of use. Thought I’d save you a click.
Oh yeah great because survival as a species is less important than half a point on the Dow next quarter. We’re fucking doomed, I’m gonna give up and I’ll be glad we chose not to have children.
Haha, sometimes Lemmy’s ‘nothing to see here’ is prescient.
Everything’s comin’ up Milhouse!
In 15 words: deep learning worked, got predictably better with scale, and we dedicated increasing resources to it.
Are you sure about that Sam? Because one, you’re the snake oil salesman writing this and I wouldn’t trust you as far as I can throw you, and two, yeah maybe it scales predictably but the prediction is that training the next generation for marginal improvement will cost an exponential 100 billion (and that is taking your Microsoft discount for compute into account). You’re hitting a wall hard and the profits are still not in sight. This avenue of progress is a dead end and Sam knows it, because OpenAI is selling PPU’s instead of stock and looking to Saudi investment. Don’t get stuck with the bag folks, the few thousand days Sam claims to need aren’t survivable.
I don’t know about lots of power. I don’t want to be defeatist, I vote for survival and I do what’s in my power to spare the planet but hope eludes me. I’m starting to make peace with the fact that humanity will be facing the music soon.
We can, we just won’t.
FUCK FRONT BRAKES! LET’S GOOOOO
This has been glaringly obvious for 5 decades now. Hope escaped me. I will vote to survive and I will do what I reasonably can, but I don’t think humanity will make it. Which, according to the nihilist in me, is fine really. We never mattered to anyone but ourselves.
I love the lack of a front brake. Let’s fucking go!
I would also like to know how you did that because as far as I’m aware Fairphone is not supported.
As in my profits, our losses?
Oh so I guess piracy is fine if it’s citizens getting robbed huh? Funny how that works.
All those negative things are happening in a society that implemented mass surveillance so clearly it doesn’t help. Recording a crime doesn’t prevent it and if there’s no incentive or funding to make sure justice is served afterwards the recording is useless. I think you’re mistaken in who this surveillance is for: it doesn’t exist to improve your life but to empower corporations and state against you.
As a 20 year IT veteran, first help desk, then sysadmin and now R&D, I am jealous. By the end of this year my cost of living will decrease significantly and I’m contemplating taking the financial hit for a career change.
I would say you should be free to make the decision to forego the advantages working though a middle man affords you, if you would prefer the savings. That said, there’s consumer protection, quality certification (important for insurance purposes), returns, after sales care and I’m sure I’m forgetting stuff. Nothing to do with differences in the product itself, more so the guarantee of a product that does what it says on the tin.
