I bought a computer in 2007 that was 8GB of RAM and a TB Hard-drive, but a recent windows update bricked the machine because it didn’t have enough space. Is that what’s going to happen to these machines? Just, right off-the-line and into the garbage?

Climate@slrpnk.net•Liberals Can't Address the Climate Crisis Because It Means Confronting Capitalism31·3 days agoThe rule is, always vote for the left-most person running that has a chance at winning. Progressive socialists are the only way forward. But sometimes you gotta hold your nose and vote for the person that’s simply not running on the protect-the-pedophiles platform.

Climate@slrpnk.net•Liberals Can't Address the Climate Crisis Because It Means Confronting Capitalism48·3 days agoI love seeing it. We’ve got a party in power that’s rolling back environmental protections, rolling back regulations, increasing the amount of pollution companies are allowed to dump, while backing a far-right dictator to take over and decimate the Amazon rainforest but, BUT, it’s actually the minority party that’s been thwarting their efforts’ fault.
See I figured the people trying to ban cancerous pesticides and fund green technology would be the good guys, but now from this article I see that actually they’re the bad guys all along!
Guess this election I’ll just stick my thumb up my ass and dance around the living room to the sound of my own superior thinking instead of voting. That’ll show’em 👍

47·6 days agoA bunch of posts? I wrote a conversation provoking comment that was upvoted far more than downvoted, and spurred other comments.
it was removed because the mod has an anti-democratic agenda that they can’t defend. Instead they just remove comments and ban people. It’s shitty behavior by a shitty mod, and deserves to be called out. I’ve seen 2 other threads talking about this exact behavior.

344·7 days agoComing in with the “both sides are actually bad” when talking about the ungodly massive amount of rape that occurs and the teeny tiny small percentage of false accusations that happen is a truly adolescent, apologist, and downright horrible take.
“Won’t somebody please think of the rape gangs feelings!?”

uhhhh, how about getting him more than 2 fucking years??
The judge said Poklek would be released after serving about a third of his prison sentence under the Sentencing Act 2026, and called for longer sentences for animal abuse, which currently has a five-year maximum.

Technology@lemmy.world•Internal files add to evidence of an ExxonMobil climate deception campaignEnglish
17·8 days agoExxon did not respond to requests for comment, but it has denied misleading the public or investors about climate change.
That’s a lie.
“We believe the legal and factual theories set forth in these proceedings are meritless and represent an inappropriate attempt to use the court system to usurp the proper role of policymakers in addressing the societal challenges of climate change.”
Read: We only want the people we have direct control over (policy makers they bribe) to have any say in this matter.
Asked whether a 2018 press release, which said Exxon anticipated “10,000 barrels of algae biofuel per day could be produced by 2025,” was misleading, the scientist said “yes,” adding, “All the clauses in there are patently false.”
That’s their own scientist calling them liars.
With the threat of climate action looming, he (Sprow) wrote, the company’s research and development on “Greenhouse” should have two primary goals: “Protect the value of our resources (oil, gas, coal),” and “Preserve Exxon’s business options.”
Sprow then laid out an agenda for how to achieve those ends.
With modeling critical to climate science, he wrote, “it could be considered important to be at the forefront of this modeling effort.” Sprow proposed “supporting a person on staff at one of the leading modeling centers (e.g. Princeton) or by sending one of our people to work in such a center.”
That’s their CEO telling them that “now that climate change is out of the bag, we need to focus on protecting our business (you know, as opposed to the only planet we have), and we need to engage in criminal subterfuge to either bribe a climate modeling expert, or insert one of our own agents into the field.”
“continue to question the scientific basis and cite the high economic cost” of policies to address climate change and “avoid pressures to negotiate a compromise.”
That’s a quote from a meeting of oil executives, laying out the framework of their carpet denial of climate change. The strategy is something you’ve seen before. Disrupt action by “just asking questions, while bringing up the cost” and “avoid accountability.”
This is the same strategy republikkkans use to deny you healthcare and justice. Except in this case it’s being weaponized to help them achieve wealth by destroying our only planet.

Technology@lemmy.world•Visa, Mastercard, Major Banks Facing New Litigation Over ‘Anticompetitive’ Merchant Credit Card Transaction FeesEnglish
4·9 days agoThe place that handles my rental says “good news! you can pay by credit card on-line now!” and then just quietly tacks on an extra $8 charge on top of the credit card also getting their beak wet. So now I gotta pay like $15 just to pay my godamn rent??
I refuse to pay these BS fees. I only ever drop off checks. That still only costs me for the amount I pay for the checks, which is only a few cents per If memory serves.
What’s even worse is when you’re in debt and you gotta pay fees just to make a payment on that. Living in america means you’re always just a couple steps from debtors prison or living on the street.

Well what happened is it tried to update, got stuck, and now won’t start. tried starting it over and over and over again while hitting F1 and F2 and it just spins it’s fans. Though it randomly will start-up into a weird BIOS safe mode and give me a couple options, but I’ve yet to find the magic option that let’s me boot it up using the previous version of windows just so I can turn it into a Linux machine. It’s gotten to the point that I’m willing to pay someone to take it and convert it into Linux Fedora or Debian for me (and then pay for a quick tutorial in how tf Linux works 😭 )
EDIT is this actually a service? If this exists I’ll fucking do it, I swear
