Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's the last straw that made you quit commercial social medias (Meta,TwitterX, etc...)?
1·10 months agoAfter fully switching to Linux in 2022, I’ve pretty much ditched everything and anything mainstream; not just social media.
The Apple II was a good computer but if I lived in that era I probably would have used a Commodore 64 and later the Amigas or a i386 IBM clone.
Seymour, who reportedly had a daily rate of $150 for his translation services, lasted less than a day on the job before he was replaced.
$150 in 1977 is roughly $800 today. I don’t think he charged enough for such an epic troll.

Science Fiction@lemmy.world•What SF books did you enjoy the most in 2024?
2·11 months agoI can see the angle you’re coming from. I enjoyed Fall of Hyperion but not nearly as much as the first book. As for Dan Simmons himself, I’ve only vaguely heard about his political views. I compare it to Frank Miller’s legacy in that they’re both creatives who have a back catalog of celebrated works that is juxtaposed by their reactionary viewpoints.

Science Fiction@lemmy.world•What SF books did you enjoy the most in 2024?
7·11 months agoIt was the only one I read but I say it anyways: The Fall of Hyperion by Dan Simmons.
If audiobooks are considered reading then I will include I, Robot, Foundation and Empire, amd Herbert West - Reanimator.

171·11 months agoSo, I did some very basic reverse image searching with Google Lens and, as others of pointed out, it seems to have originated from Facebook. More specifically, it originates from some kind of copypasta first posted on Sept. 15th of this year by user Hashem Al-Ghaili. This same copypasta later appears in two other places: in Turkish (twice) and again on someone’s Linkedin post. Since many (myself included) suspected this to be AI generated, I ran this through AI image detector sightengine. Now, AI detection tools are very flawed so I took the results with a grain of salt. Nonetheless, It came back with a 99% chance of it being AI generated with Midjourney being the most likely candidate for its creation.
