    Got a tax write off

So the 100 million is taxed at 100%…

    Right?

If a studio uses a project as a tax write off, then it should become public domain. That didn’t happen, so next best thing is seizing all the gross profits

It got sold off, at a massive discount, to a different distributer who decided to put it in theaters. Your solution is to punish the people that took a risk on a movie that another studio decided (for bullshit reasons) wasn’t good enough to release.

No, my solution would mean this company could have just done it…

Along with any other company …

If you don’t know what “public domain” means, fucking ask someone if you can’t manage to look it up

It never ceases to amaze me how badly people understand copyright/IP and tax. This is a rare occasion with both at the same time, complimented by verbal abuse.

The above poster is clearly behaving like a dumbass but the reason so many people misunderstand those concepts has a lot to do with how contradictory the laws are to our intuitive notions of reasonableness and fairness.

Probably just read the title and had no idea what really happened. And also doesn’t understand anything.

I mean my bet would always be that someone doesn’t understand tax write-offs. They’re consistently talked about in a way completely detached from reality!

That’s not how any of that works. Any expense is a tax write off. Income/revenue is what is taxed. Them selling it off at a discount is what turned it into a tax write off, which is still a loss. The revenue is generated by those who bought it for cheap. And that is taxed like it normally would be, which probably isn’t high enough, but taxed nonetheless.

sold to a different company in the same fashion sony sold Kpop Demon Hunters to Netflix and Netflix reaped the rewards for the movie popping off.

The part I think you are missing is that they didn’t write off the entire cost of the movie. They sold the rights to the movie for less than it cost to produce, and wrote off the difference of the sale price and the cost of production. This is a normal feature of the tax system. If you buy a stock for $15 and sell it for $10, you only have to pay tax on the $10 you sold it for, you get to write the $5 off as a loss. If a company spends money on operation, they don’t get taxed on that cost. If a company makes 2 million dollars, but to do so they had to pay their employees a total of 1.5 million dollars, the company itself only pays taxes on the $500k.

Its not an old story retold, its an old character in a new story.

Like Space Jam was to Bugs Bunny, the original was original, the remake with Lebron was not original.

Kids will like it, Adults will like it more. Theres a couple of jokes that will sail straight over kids heads and some that will only hit if you watched the originals as a kid.

I didn’t think it was a very good movie.

I still loved that they made it and I do not regret seeing it. I just didn’t think it was very good. I did not love it, or hate it. It was a 5.5-6/10. Above average but not much.

I’m also the generation it was made for.

IMO it’s better than most things studios are putting out. It makes no sense to just not release it.

Tbh that’s disheartening to hear. It has a budget of 70m. After standard marketing/distribution costs, the distribution company is probably hoping to make up the necessary funds in long term licensing fees, or losing money on the investment. I know the movie was already made and shelving it was asinine, but it would’ve been nice for the project to be fairly profitable as to disparage future efforts to kill films already finished.

Almost the entire marketing budget is in this thread.

The outrage over it getting shelved and the company taking the write off is like 90% of the things I heard about the movie. I went to see it with my daughter out of spite (we also needed a school holidays movie but I picked this one because of WB’s bullshit.
