Why Human Writing Is Worth Defending In the Age of ChatGPT::A specter is haunting the landscape—the specter of generative AI. First came fears that student cheating would explode, plus that artists and actors would be unemployed. Then the ante was upped: So…

I’ve been trying to make GPT write cool stories for me. As long as it’s short enough to fit on a single sheet of paper, you’re good. If it’s short story spanning 5-50 pages, you’re going to run into a whole bunch of weird issues that basically turn you from a reader to an editor.

You can make GPT write stuff for you, but it takes a surprising amount of time to get what you want. Some times I feel like I’m telling a horse to plow a field, but the horse feels like zigzagging all over the place. If you want neat lines that cover the entire field, you’re going to have to hold its hand at every turn.

If we permeate everything with AI writing, eventually AI is going to find and use its own (or another AI’s) writings as a resource and just get perpetually more shitty over time. Capitalists are quick to strip everything of its human touch if it nets them another fat pay rise. It’s enshittification via AI with the help of overpaid suits.

Maybe because there’s that concept of entropy in Markovian processes. Or in simpler words - the bigger share AI-created stuff holds in the whole corpus of texts we read and use, the more degenerate they become over time.

Eh, guess, this doesn’t look simpler, but I’m just clumsy with words. The general idea is clear, I hope.

AI writing will be wanted more or less depending on what is being written, the context, the quality, and the audience. It is here now. If it is better, people will consume it. You might have a favorite AI writer for cyberpunk adventure but prefer a human written autobiography.
