This is silly. The web is not in decline and Google is not at fault. Most of the web is garbage, and Google helps us find the information buried in a sea of ads and repetitively copied/reworded content. We are moving to a world where putting up a plagiarized page with tons of ads will not be profitable. The sooner that day arrives, the better.

This has a lot more to do with consumption than with production. Most of these islands are small, and it’s unrealistic for them to have large populations or a heavy tourist industry without desalination plants. Energy needs to become cheap, and honestly, wind farms and solar can help with this.

Agreed but it bugs me that I need to pay Reddit to not see ads and on top of that they get paid for the content we produce. The fediverse is a better model.

I don’t object to my content being used for training. I do object to Reddit profiting from that data. It’s the reason I basically don’t participate on Reddit anymore. Anything I post in the fediverse I am aware I am offering it up for free to be crawled and used as seen fit as long as it is not monetized without my consent. I don’t consider model training to be monetization.

If RCS is such an awesome standard, why not mandate it for all EU phones? Apple already supports the current standard, which is SMS. The idea that they have to open up their proprietary software seems silly to me.

Just wait till the first security vulnerability are discovered in the code that now will be able to run on iOS and which Apple can’t control directly. Nobody will remember that the cause was forcing Apple to open up their system. They will just blame Apple.

In don’t know or care about their intentions. If we want to claim we are an open protocol then mastodon needs to role with the puches. Otherwise you might as well be on threads.

Good to know. I’ll keep an eye on it. There is something about the visual presentation of Bean that I prefer. If Mlem let me only focus on unread and mark read as I scroll, I think it would be my preferred client. The developer won’t do it, but until the Lemmy API allows for marking several real posts as read at a time. I guess it’s too inefficient if not.

The last Bean release was one month ago. I would not judge that as development that is dead.

I do notice that Avelon seems to update quicker and refresh quicker than Bean, but I’m not sure if that’s just perception 

My problem with mastodon is the same one I have with Twitter. It’s very easy to get up and running. You can get a feed filled with nonsense to read but if you’re actually interested in any topic, it’s really hard to get a feed that matches your interest. 

I think most of the stats are deceiving. In my opinion, most of the actual activity or users read, and comment happens on Lemmy, as opposed to mastodon where you mostly just have observers. 

As a group I suspect you’re right but I really question why we have a tax system that is so accommodating to their requests. It’s money in politics. I’m pretty clear about that one.

Well I suspect we are looking at this problem through a very simple lens. The billionaires are not necessarily using that money. It is out there being invested and also being loaned out to start new businesses startups etc. if you just handed it to the government assuming it will be better spent or invested is a big leap.

The phrase “the rich” is quite broad. I really don’t know what the rich believe or want.

Well, I’m not so sure about that. If you take that wealth and let the government decide how to spend it, you are assuming it will reach those who need it. I’m not so sure that is the case.
