i think programmer humor is supposed to be more specific than “any humor related to anything made by programmers”

what does this meem have to do with progammer humor, though?
I think they’re talking about taking down Flock cameras (spyware installed in public places by some for-profit corpo)

DeGoogle Yourself@lemmy.ml•Google bussness hours and reviews are finally getting SOME sort of competition
16·4 days agoi don’t think business hours and reviews are the main google maps has a monopoly. as someone who occasionally uses both google maps and openstreetmap, the main reason i use google maps is because it’s just more reliable - some points of interest aren’t on openstreetmap, and its search doesn’t work consistently. i rarely actually use google maps for business hours, and never reviews.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Researchers Uncover Signs of Massive Surveillance Operation on Starlink Users
5·5 days agothis isn’t practical. we can disable some javascript but disabling it entirely would prevent us from using almost all websites, many of which we’re forced to by our employers, governments, etc
The end of my usage was about one year ago. I’d tried several other clients in the years prior (Fractal, Nheko, Mirage, and some others I forgot the names of) but all of them had their own major issues, severe enough to eventually drive me back to Element
It’s certainly possible the ecosystem has matured somewhat since then, but I would be skeptical because I think the root of the problem was not that these projects were too young, but that the protocol was too complex for anyone to implement properly, much like the web

Not the Onion@lemmy.ml•Anthropic IPO warns its AI could blackmail people, become sentient, end humanity
27·7 days agoI’ve always found it bizarre how AI companies are like “our AI is gonna destroy the world, that’s why you should help us build it!”
I like this meme because both it and the original are true.
speaking as a former matrix user and fan, I hate it because:
- the protocol is absurdly complex and bloated
- despite the promises of an open standard making interoperable clients possible, Element is the only client that supports most of the features in my experience, and it has constant bugs.
- It’s also slow and has some really annoying interface design issues, like not being able to adjust the width of the sidebar to where I want it (to be fair, many other messengers, like Signal, also have this problem)
- I had several experiences inviting someone to become a new Matrix user and having to immediately tell them that I couldn’t decrypt their messages and the first 3 things we tried to resolve it didn’t work. Made me feel like an ass for inviting them
- It has many security flaws (for example, all sorts of metadata and even some kinds of message content, like emoji reactions, are unencrypted)
- The whole “verify your device” nag thing is incredibly annoying and when I try to actually do it, it has almost never worked for me.
Overall, I view it much like I do XMPP. it takes basically the same approach to everything and has all of the same downsides, except E2EE is easier to get working I guess
just tradition. same reason everyone still uses a lotta shitty things

Open Source@lemmy.ml•I need help creating an open source taxonomy for the Internet
1·8 days agoThis is a really cool idea, and I’ve seen some similar ones before but nothing this concrete. Though, I do think blackbrook’s comment makes a good point that a hierarchy of categories might be the wrong approach. Would a tag-like system be possible instead? Looking at the list, I’m thinking many sites span many of these categories.
It reminds me of my own project, https://detailed-game-search.com/, which uses tags organized by applicability and an entry can have any number of tags, but there’s many tricky edge cases that I’m not sure how to solve.
