  • I mean, the bar is on the ground at this point at best.

It was a painful process, having my love of Pokémon games slowly stripped away until I finally gave up on them. It’s hard giving up on something that you’ve loved from childhood. Pokémon used to be my comfort game and it’s now unplayable trash.

The only reason I still have my Switch at all right now is the Zelda franchise because I currently lack the means to emulate. And the occasional sale item from the eShop because I’m not paying full price for a Switch game ever again after they ruined Pokémon.

I’m surprised no one’s brought up the hellscape we know as the Nintendo eShop. It’s >90% trash.

  • In descending order of good privacy:

    • Tor (not necessary for the majority of use-cases)
    • Hardened Firefox (you can find tutorials for this with a quick Google)
    • Mullvad
    • Librewolf
    • Brave (yes there’s controversy about crypto and the founder being a dick, it’s still miles better than Chrome)
    • Everything else
    • Chrome itself (seriously, don’t use Chrome)

My number 1 recommended plugin for privacy and getting rid of ads is always ✨ uBlock Origin ✨ (not uBlock, that’s not the one by the OG dev).

Also slavery was typically nowhere near as a different sort of brutal in that era. Still brutal and terrible, but not “working people to death and then shipping in more people to work to death” brutal.

Edit: changed my wording because slavery has always been fucking horrible, e.g. eunuchs

  • I think part of the issue is that there’s a lot more predatory shit on the internet nowadays. I say this as a person who has had unfettered access to the internet since my tweens. Social media and The Algorithms have changed the internet, and not necessarily for the better.

Just as a for-instance, if you go to YouTube on a freshly installed browser without logging in, the front page is kind of wild. Then the algorithm will pull you down a rabbit hole and kids who haven’t been taught that they’re being manipulated are going to start taking everything as fact from people like Tate.

We didn’t have things trying to get in our heads to this extent; while I do wish the kids had their freedom, I also recognise that the internet has become hell. I can understand why parents would try to shield their kids from that.
