Have you ever used bank software, or some government services site? It is often really hard to not get the idea that it was designed and run by idiots. As someone who’s worked as a software developer most of my life, it is not difficult for me to believe it, either.

They also received far more abuse than usb cables. We don’t generally anchor one end of a usb cable and then walk around erratically for hours everyday within the range of the cable (and now and then pushing it) with the device on the other end of the cable.
Those cables _were_engineered for more abuse.

Linux@lemmy.ml•New Linux tech compresses memory in RAM, as RAM, for 452x speedup — new CRAM method offers giant boost to compressed memory readsEnglish
1·5 days agoRight, a stack that was itself read-only would be hard to use! :^D C definitely lets you modify the things in the stack. (Ah the fun of bugs where you accidentally overwrite other shit on the stack!) I don’t know Rust, but it would not surprise me if Rust only had immutable things on the stack.

1·5 days agoI’m drawing on some old memories here, so I could be mistaken, but I don’t think the stack is read only, not in C anyway or in the underlying machine code. If it is faster it has to do with greater overhead needed managing the larger heap and perhaps being more efficient to push and pop with small offsets to a local stack frame vs large absolute addresses.

2·9 days agoI don’t think they are the same category of thing. Ocean is a design system. Breeze is a theme.
Edit: now I’m less sure. This seemed to say it is both a style and a “design system” which I took to mean a technical mechanism for styles, but now i’m less clear what they mean.
The belts, other than the Bible belt are made up. Garfield, People Magazine (which I assume that abrev is for…this might not be clear to some) and 17th century French drama are real…

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why is searching the Internet so frustrating now?English
81·10 days agoThere are leaked emails from Google (from many years ago) where it was proposed to purposely degrade search quality to increase ad clicks. While some at Google responded with dismay as this, it is not a great leap to assume that this faction eventually won and they did in fact deliberately do that. Advertising is Google’s main revenue source, they are clearly motivated to do so.

3·10 days agoSearch quality has been degrading for years, even before AI was involved.

1·11 days agoDefinitely sounds like it’s leveraging some water memory ideas.
It just depends on you being familiar with the term “bible belt” which is a way of describing that most of the American south is very religious. It takes that idea and extrapolates the existance of several sillier “belts”.
I get a ton of left wing stuff recommended in my feed and no right wing trash. As much as the algorithm has degraded, it can learn things like this from what you watch and like.

1·16 days agoI think this what I came up with last time I considered this question, and I also wonder if I might want to use it for my next machine myself. Do you have a lot of experience using it? Do you feel like it performs pretty well? (I just have concerns that everything being containerized with flatpak and docker might affect that…)
Alright, what am I not getting?

I think this is the answer, but peeing on the seat is another level of dysfunctional. Peeing standing up without lifting the seat is not ok even by guys-peeing-standing-up standards. And peeing on the seat while sitting down suggests another problem, and then if you have that problem, not wiping off the seat is even more inconsiderate than leaving a few splashes on the rim of the bowl itself. I have to wonder if some of these boomers have some dementia.
