Hmm, probably so. Another reason not to have a giant collective art project yet.

I think it would be wildly different.
Maybe it would be a space where users can straight up post pictures and move them around in a large space. Not pixel by pixel, but a whole image at a time, in a space big enough to fit thousands of pictures.
Maybe it would be a collection of symbols and flags where users add a dot below what they identify with.
Maybe it would be a shared drawing canvas, where users can do freehand lines, outlines, and fill with colors like MS Paint, but all at once and over each other. Basically an internet graffiti wall. To align with the ideas of Lemmy, it would be possible to “wall off” off bits of the greater canvas, and block the rest of the users so that only one community/magazine /server can draw on that space, while any unclaimed area stays wide open for anyone.
Maybe it would not exist at all, because the whole mentality of the Fediverse might not support enough collective expression.
It would be news, and even harder to believe as real news.
Yeah, I’m having trouble seeing this as real news.
Adding to this, Devolution by Max Brooks. Book only
I also like earth based hard sci-fi with some mystery and horror. This book hits all three points, and is very character driven on top of that.
Signal with 2 people who actually moved there with me, standard messages app that came with Samsung for most people, and Facebook Messenger Lite for anything that works better there, or contacting people who I’m not close enough with to get their phone number.
I see “but it does gps!” As an excuse in favor of the oversized screens. But a heads up display, reading aloud turn by turn directions, or even a set of lights to indicate where you should go would do the same thing better
And I’d like to have a word with them… About how good their idea is!
That’s a great start. I am dreaming of some kind of a full dashboard and center console replacement. While I’m at it, I may as well dream of having the money to afford a car that would be new enough to need such an upgrade plus be able to afford the upgrade itself.
I think the driver should definitely have radio controls, just not through a touch screen. Passenger touch screens should be for their entertainment and their own heating/cooling settings. I think the passenger controls should have nothing to do with the way the car drives and handles, or headlights, wipers, anything like that.
My opinion is that touch screens should be for passengers only. Display screens are fine, but if physical buttons are so unacceptable, then we need voice control that actually works.
Also, I’m surprised no one has started a company to retrofit buttons and switches into modern cars. Whatever kind of headache that would be to design and install, I’d like to see it work.
I think if a thing like Place were made for Lemmy, it would need to be so different to fit the values of the Fediverse that it would need a new name. Different rules, different way of interaction, different output.
I use it kind of like WD-40 in a farm setting. It’s messy, but not as messy as grease. It’s effective to coat things that constantly wear and have started to rust. I also rub it on my leather boots to waterproof it for cheap.
I had no idea it existed before the API changes were announced.
I’ve pulled one of those wireless trimmers apart when it quit working. I found a rechargeable AA battery soldered in there.
