That is interesting to know. It doesn’t look like lemmy.world has opted out, judging by their robots.txt.

Not going to use this one either, but I wish I could use LibreOffice.
It’s really laggy for me on Windows. Particulary when interacting with the window, moving or resizing it. It’s not smooth at all. As someone who uses everything windowed and moves windows around all the time, I tried using it, but it’s unusable for me imo.

so maybe that active user count above is something like weekly active
Every instance provides its MAU publically on request, but there’s no centralized server they all send their MAU to proactively. Third party websites trying to display an overall MAU have to manually check instances, for which they need to be aware of them to. Then add up the numbers.
As a result, different sites can display different MAU because they’re aware of and checking different instances.
There’s no weekly active users provided by instances, so I really doubt it’s that. Instances only provide monthly and half year numbers.

but their MAU math is suspect
Do they do any math? I assumed it’s simply additive. They get the MAU from individual instances via their crawler, then display a total?
Differences to other sites is probably due to the set of instances checked, not anything math related.
Can confirm, I’m part of the 99%. Never tried Lemmy in the first place.
What do you think about the Mbin model? (linked an example post)
To be fair, karma farmers aren’t really possible on Lemmy.

That change helped reduce scraping and automated abuse, but still allowed any logged-in account to access Old Reddit, including accounts with no prior Old Reddit use.
To close this gap, in the next few months, we’ll further limit access for logged-in users to only those who have used Old Reddit in the last six months
How horrible, ANY logged-in account can just access old reddit?? That needs to be fixed asap, how dare new users just use old reddit when they have a perfectly good shreddit available to them. — Reddit admins apparently
Nice admission there. Didn’t expect them to be this open about their true feelings on the matter.

Worth noting, on FediDB, Lemmy+Piefed+Mbin is sitting at 54.8k MAU. Lemmy itself is at 46.4k. Though I don’t know the historical situation there.

I mean, they’re required by the law in certain countries. With their size, there’s no way around that.

If you use Mbin, or I believe Piefed now too, instead of Lemmy, you can interact with Mastodon freely without having to get a separate account there. I’m subscribed to a lot of Mastodon accounts as a threadiverse user, and I only have this one account.

Imo reviving Twitter as paid ai slop is just making a mockery of it.

We still have lots of forums running on open source #Discourse software, but we don’t have an easy way to connect and engage all those communities back into #Lemmy, #ActivityPub, and the #Fediverse to make them findable with the same ease Reddit provides.
Might be a stupid question, but have you tried the Discourse Activitypub plugin? Discourse is part of the threadiverse.

Why do people in these threads always act like uBlock is the only adblocker out there? It’s true that MV3 nerfed adblockers in general, but not nearly as much as what I’ve heard about uBlock Lite. The one I’ve always been using hasn’t really changed functionally at all from what I can tell.
Like, I see some people act like Chromium just doesn’t have usable adblockers at all anymore. That’s just not true.
Same in Switzerland. If it’s not software, downloading is fully legal.
They came from Reddit, communities having their own rules which you’re supposed to read before posting isn’t an alien concept to them. I believe it’s justified to expect that much from them.
Also, that post was restored pretty much right after it got removed.
and mbin (or kbin, whichever is still in use)
It is Mbin that’s still alive, yeah. Despite some instances still being named kbin, like the one I’m on, they’re actually running Mbin.

Now I wonder if I should really register a new account for each service. May I ask for your advice? What do you recommend?
Do you get any benefits from the accounts? You can subscribe to Lemmy communities from Piefed and vice versa. Piefed can now follow Mastodon users iirc. So do you get any benefits from having accounts on both Lemmy and Piefed separately? Are there other benefits to a Friendica account for you than following Mastodon accounts?
That’s the important question really. If they don’t have anything to offer to you that the others already provide, then you don’t need that account.
I can understand people staying on Reddit more than those staying on Twitter to be honest.
At least spez hasn’t gone full nazi yet, or provided tools for generating pedophilia.
Both of which people seem to be perfectly fine with. So it doesn’t surprise me they’re fine with Reddit too.
I knew to check robots.txt because of fedidb’s Data Sources page, which specifies what data they get, their user agent, and how to opt-out via robots.txt.
One thing I’m noticing in regards to lemmy.world, I wonder if they ever disallowed access to the nodeinfo endpoint in their robots.txt in the past. They don’t currently, but the wording suggests that having that rule at any point will forever remove the instance from fedidb. Which could explain what we’re seeing for that instance.
