I‘m way ahead of you. Using three forgejo instances and patiently waiting for federation. I love forgejo.

I agree. But I would go further and say if other industries didnt have more complex schemes and locked down IP (eg car manufacturing), people would def build their own shit with current tools. Its always the greed of those not willing to invest in innovation that keeps progress away. Media piracy and FOSS culture are the only real challengers to greed imo.
Solid take.
Peertube is essentially mastodon or lemmy with videos. Its trivial to set up compared to the other two. I run a private instance so I cant talk about the rate of issues but from an experienced admin perspective, its no more of a problem to set up and run than the others.
But I too think that long term it would be great to have more user friendly setups as to enable less experienced folks to host it.
As someone with diagnosed mental health issues, I can tell you that I mean no harm. But sadly, the pure difference in perception paired with unfamiliarity of the two parties makes the situation insanely dangerous, not the person.
You never know why the person is in this predicament and if they have a tendency towards violence, robbery or other things. I‘m not saying they are. I‘m saying you have to assume they are before making that decision. Can you defend yourself against a pulled knife or even gun, do you have enough mental capacity to observe them at all times. Those odds do not look good.
So, although I would never willingly look down on folks less fortunate than myself. I too will never ever let a stranger into my house if they raise any concerns.
Dont buy stuff from amazon. Its like „have you seen that guy lucifer? He sells the greatest stuff for cheap!“ what could go wrong…
It makes no sense to switch from either to the other imo. It would make sense to switch to mobile linux for those who are tech savvy and once it is more polished, the others.
Ragebait or some kid pointing at others ignoring their own toxicity.
Also wrong sub. There are reddit specific subs.
Which is exactly how the real world works. Harm has to be identified to suggest solutions. Otherwise you‘re becoming the helicopter parent that denies their kid every opportunity to learn and cause allergies and other bad outcomes. Translated back to the fediverse: it is great the way it is and improvements are always encouraged. We have much bigger and more pressing issues. This is not it.
Oh! I didnt know that was OS only! Thanks for lmk!
Additional question: wouldn’t it be cool to have a place where you can only get open source stuff? Obviously there needs to be more to it than this fact i presume but its a start.
You can. Source: I run an instance.
Ah! Nice. I can only encourage you to do so. It is in fact quite a bit of work but I‘m sure its both going to be easier every day and depending on your skillset and setup, you’ll probably have it a lot easier than me. I have like 13 docker stacks atm. only on my vps and another 10 or so on my homeserver. :)
Glad you asked. Yes, mostly. Some things are still janky but most of it works. Whats your setup?
Thanks for the suggestion. Will check it out! :)
Thanks for pointing this out. For now, I’m good with the @matrix but I will keep that in mind. Now the federation seems to be working. I completely threw out the npm config and remade it. Here’s the new logs. One thing doesn’t work anymore though: I’m not receiving messages from my second account and am not getting “is online” notification (green circle). Here’s the current log. https://hastebin.com/share/piyumiloho.yaml (btw the .well-known was because federation tester pointed out there was none and I assumed that was the problem.)
docker-compose.yml https://hastebin.com/share/izeroqiqil.yaml homeserver.yaml https://hastebin.com/share/iquzehofen.yaml npm host file https://hastebin.com/share/alolegoyey.bash synapse log https://hastebin.com/share/abumisutuz.yaml (please note that these errors are not representative of the “functioning but no federation” I had earlier since I seemingly broke something when trying to set it up differently.)
Here is the config! Thanks again for offering your help!
lemmy.hjson https://hastebin.com/share/giqoxejiru.yaml docker-compose.yml https://hastebin.com/share/osavazijag.yaml npm host file https://hastebin.com/share/ruyivojoyu.bash lemmy ui log https://hastebin.com/share/lakurefohe.php
Let me know if you need anything else! :)
Here it is! Thanks again for offering your help.
I definitely will post them. Just gotta get to my pc. Thanks for offering your help.
Life is just a bleak pile of shit sometimes. But there are wonderful parts too. Reach out to one person you know and talk to them. The rules of statistics say that way more people appreciate you than you think. If you dont immediately know who to call, check https://findahelpline.com
I hope you get better soon.
