That mentality is surely broader than fascism itself. You see it in any hypernationalist state. Rome had “the barbarians.” The British Empire had “the savages.” Nazi Germany had “the jews.” There is always an “other” when the state needs it. Unless you’re painting a broader form of fascism, perhaps.

As someone with ADHD, life is exactly this: negotiating with your brain to do the unrewarding thing by including a reward (i.e. buying a $40 pair of fluffy socks to make laundry end in a pleasant feeling). My “did a good job” dopamine response is hella muted and it makes anything that isn’t an immediate need or spur-of-the-moment whim get prioritized very poorly. Having a “transactional view” may be less about personality and more about mental makeup.

  • Yet language and abstraction are the core of intelligence. You cannot have intelligence without 2 way communication, and if anything, your brain contains exactly that dictionary you describe. Ask any verbal autistic person, and 90% of their conversations are scripted to a fault. However, there’s another component to intelligence that the Turing Test just scrapes against. I’m not philosophical enough to identify it, but it seems like the turing test is looking for lightning by listening for rumbling that might mean thunder.

  • Actually, that may not be a face of disgust. That cat is inducing the scent into their mucus ducts behind their 2 large top canines. They channel up into the nose, and unlike humans and dogs, cats are scentblind to anything airborn, and need to encorporate the chemicals into a fluid. It takes them a second of “mouth breathing” after smelling a thing to trigger the scent response in their brain. I had a cat that made the most disgusted face whenever we gave her wet food, but then she always burried her snout straight to the bottom of the tin.
