Privacy@lemmy.ml•Do you prefer XMPP or Matrix powered apps as a discord alternative?English
3·8 months agoThe rooms we had issues with were public rooms that were discoverable via Matrix, with a couple of links on the web to direct people to them. The links to the rooms still exist in the same places, but ever since converting them to XMPP links rather than Matrix ones the traffickers have disappeared. I couldn’t tell you if that’s because XMPP is less popular with that crowd or if the tools they’re using to discover and spam them don’t work on XMPP. Either way it was a welcome change.

71·8 months agoIn my experience XMPP is easy to set up, lighter on resources, and the clients tend to work well across multiple platforms. We have small private and public groups using it daily with zero complaints.
Matrix tends to be more involved in setting up, and our group ran into issues where some clients weren’t working as smoothly or reliably as we needed for a primary communication platform. We also had a huge problem with traffickers of all sorts joining our rooms to spam their telegram links or CSAM. That hasn’t been a problem after more than a year on XMPP.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Where can I go on lemmy to find things like the video of the recent shooting or other important events that are not just news headlines and memes?
1·9 months agoI understand your frustration! Unfortunately I don’t have an easy answer.
The culture on Lemmy can cause a fair bit of confusion at first. We have this phenomenon where people migrate here and want to have all the niche communities that existed where they came from without the users required to maintain those places. As a result we have a lot of communities with little to no interaction because it’s usually just one or two people contributing. The situation you’re describing is a pretty common example of this.
If you’re looking for existing communities you may have better luck finding them on Lemmyverse. If you still don’t find the type of place you’re looking for, you might consider creating a community for the more generalized content you want to share. If that isn’t something you feel comfortable taking on alone, maybe others would be willing to help you run it and keep things active. Lemmy is full of people looking for places to participate!

2·9 months agoIt wasn’t an endorsement of their policies, just a place that the videos you asked about have been popping up.
I don’t think one is better than the other, just different. Indoor/outdoor both come with their own challenges. Outdoor growing is far more of a lottery IMO. There’s only so much you can do when nature doesn’t want to go along with your plans.
