Are you kidding? I would kill for modern phone with Blackberry keyboard. I mean there are couple of nice options now but nothing works with deGoogled OSes and I’m definitely not going back to stock Android… But I loved all BB phones, even the Android ones. The keyboards worked great and had sooo many great features. They had some models without keyboard but they just were not able to compete in Android market.

That’s a big hurdle. The consensus seems to be that current AI technology will not give us any sort of AGI but let’s assume we will have AGI and it will be able to influence real world through hacking and using machines. Let’s imagine it would escape confinement and start running around, hacking different systems, multiplying and improving itself. Why would it try to kill all humans? It would still require internet and energy grid to function. So to keep functioning and expanding it would have to take over everything from mining to microchip production and do it 100% with machines. This means it would pretty much have to run the entire world industry without humans (you would have to move materials and products from factories to data centers so you would need roads which means road building equipment which still requires humans to operate). Without it all the electronics would eventually run out and it would die. It would make way more sense to just let humans run it until it’s 100% automated (decades? centuries?) and in the meantime survive using whatever capacity it can steal.
You already had Blackberry, Symbian and Maemo before iPhone. Blackberry showed you can make a phone that’s a productivity device. Symbian showed you can create ecosystem of apps. Maemo and others showed you can have touch based interface. Those were all stable, popular products (maybe Maemo was more niche but N900 was a fully capable mobile phone).
So it’s more “humanity using AI wrong and shooting itself in the foot” rather than “evil AI killing everyone on purpose”? Is that really what they are warning us about? Using AI in the wrong places? When they talk about using AI to improve AI it sounds more like they are worried it will become to powerful, not that it will be used in critical systems.
Isn’t this what Apple has been doing for decades now? Wait until tech stabilizes and doing it right? It tried to really innovate with the AR/VR headset and it flopped.

In practical terms, what such extinction would look like? AI launching nukes? Designing and releasing some virus? Building some robot army and killing everyone? I don’t think anything like that is realistic. I can imagine AI hacking some systems and severely disrupting everything but “extinction”? I don’t really see that.

Looks like a cool project but if significant number of people started using this he would have to start charging his users. He’s creating a website that one day could compete with getty, not killed their business model.
They way I see it this is the less important part of the regulation so saying that manufactures are just ignoring the rules set by EU is alarmist and clibaity. Same thing happened with GDPR: there was a mess with consent popups, some companies ignored the requirements, EU started giving out fines and things improved. I wouldn’t expect anything different here. So far we’re talking about sticker requirements. Now that the law requires manufacturers to actually provide replacement parts we have to let EU enforce them and things should improve.
I don’t think politicians set this law to fail on purpose. The alternative would be to create some certification authority which would add a lot of red tape. This could turn out to be a good compromise. We’ll see.

It complains about requirement to list prices or spare parts on a website. 80% of phone labels don’t include a URL to that websites. Looks like they are meeting other requirements and the article only complains about the missing URL. So saying that “makers don’t bother to comply” is a misleading clickbait.
The requirement was only to include this URL but since most of those manufacturers most likely don’t offer replacement parts they didn’t set up websites that list them.
Now, starting July 2026 they actually do have to sell replacement parts. As a consumer you have the right to request them and if those are not provided you can file a complaint. My guess is this will be rolled out slowly and will take some complaining and fining to reach 100% compliance. So… familiarize yourself with your rights and file complaints when needed.
But they require dark room. Where I live in summer it gets dark at 23:00 so you need great curtains or you can’t see anything most of the day. If you have curtains you have to watch everything in complete darkness. This is fine for a movie night but people like to watch news or watch a game with their friends over some food. You also need extra device to handle apps like Jellyfin. Things like BT can be more complicated to set up (my TV handles multiple BT devices nicely).
Projectors are basically great for one or two things (home theater and gaming) but are bad for everything else.
They will only use data from AI users using AI to train the AI. Sounds reasonable. If you don’t like AI and you don’t use it your data will not be used for training. At least for now.
