Kevin: Hello officer, I was left alone at home.
Officer: Sure kid, let me call for someone to pick you up… Zed? The spider just caught a little fly.
Why do you think the artist was Asian looking?

Technology@lemmy.world•What does Oracle actually do? Take other businesses' data hostage for profit | Good Work [11:47]English
9·6 days agoA friend of mine was working on decommissioning Oracle at his company for the past year or two. The company bought some software that was using Oracle years ago. Turns out it was relying heavily on DB procedures and to ditch Oracle they had to move all this logic out of it first. They tried to do it couple of times before but failed. The software works so this work had low priority and would be scraped eventually to focus on more important things. On like a 3rd try they finally managed to do it and are now Oracle free.
Today it’s at 18:18:32.
I will 100% buy a beer when you get here.

Technology@lemmy.world•Mathematics disproves Matrix theory, says reality isn’t simulationEnglish
2·8 days agoI’m kidding but since we’re just playing I would say:
Let’s imagine you want to know who will win the next election. You create detailed simulation of the entire population and run it until the voting day to see how they will vote. If the simulated population realized they are in a simulation the will obviously start behaving in a different way then the real population thus making your simulation useless.
So I would say unless the goal of the simulation is to see how fast will it realize it’s just a simulation you would try to avoid them finding out.
Then again, checking if people will realize they are in a simulation is a valid reason to simulate them so it’s possible we’re in a simulation that is supposed to find out it’s a simulation…

Technology@lemmy.world•Mathematics disproves Matrix theory, says reality isn’t simulationEnglish
2·8 days agoI will prove that we’re not in a simulation:
If we’re in a simulation then whoever is operating it would not want us to know if we’re in a simulation or not.
Anyone trying to check if we’re in a simulation or not would be stopped by the operator.
I wasn’t stopped by an operator hence there is no operator and we’re not in a simulation.

For a lot of people if it’s dark when you leave work it doesn’t really matter if it got dark at 16:59 or 14:00.
Where I live it gets dark around 19:00 now. End of December it will be around 18:30. It still leaves me time for a bike ride or a quick hike after work.
Last year in December I was in Poland and at 17:00 it was completely dark outside. The bizarre thing was that it wasn’t just getting dark, there was no one outside. Walking outside at 18:00 felt like walking in the middle of the night. I would look out the window, decide it’s time to go to bed then look at the clock and see it’s 19:00. Pretty depressing.

71·11 days agoIf it has local storage then it doesn’t get uploaded anywhere.
It also has BT so the offline mode could be simply “record to SD card and view videos using some app via Bluetooth”.
Online mode with notifications and two-way talking has to require internet access so I definitely wouldn’t trust it, with or without subscription.

Hardly anyone supports it: https://www.passkeys.io/who-supports-passkeys
So to use it I will have to log in with my google/microsoft account everywhere? Thanks but no thanks.
