There is a kind of network effect or massive synergies to being “the app” for a certain topic. E.g. you can’t split up a social network into multiple competitors to break a monopoly. It takes huge investment in marketing budges and content creation to make people change, like what they did with tiktok (paid content creators big bucks).


Sorry for ranting lol. But it pisses me off especially when it comes from science news. Elsevier and sciencedirect is another service that blocks me, and I’m not even using a VPN or super secure browser.
Soon more and more webpages will only work with “authentic Chrome” or some shit, and block all VPNs. And then soon you’ll have to log into chrome. And that will create a permanent link with your government ID. I’m just tired of this predictable evil trajectory of technology. The internet was supposed to destroy tyranny, not join it!

What are the chances this is some misguided customer support tool or someone screwing up?
I’d think if this was a deliberate attempt for hacking they’d at least have a proper authentication challenge. You wouldn’t want your enemies to have access to your toys too. No matter how socialist you are haha.

Also I want a thermally insulated pressure cooker that can run on both 240V grid and on a 48V solar panels and that lasts 50 years. Tired of living in this fucking stone age.
Reminds me of how “The Man from Mars” (by Stanisław Lem) finally understand what humor was about. Look at most jokes ignoring the humor and you find be an endless stream of tragedies.


If it’s cheap and abundant enough you can have overcapacity and it easily lasts 30 years - which apparently is an important breakpoint for infrastructure project funding.


Probably numbers for the raw cell though, not the balancing and cooling which could make sodium a bit more competitive.


Interesting, but from what I understand limited charging would only be a problem if you do not have large enough battery capacity. So for heavier vehicles with larger capacity this might not matter much.
PS: This video about the CATL NaFePO4 battery also mentions a “half sodium half lithium” battery pack for cars to combine the best of both.


Afaik they are mostly intended for large scale grid storage where weight doesn’t matter. Or even efficiency, you can just add more super cheap solar panels. Their biggest advantage is longer lifespan though that makes them viable as a infrastructure project. Price and longevity is really all that matters for grid storage.
So they are a bit heavier than lithium ion batteries but could still work for many applications. Could be great for a solar powered catamaran for example. They are I think safer too.
PS: Actually I was thinking off the “sodium iron pyrophosphate (NFPP)” battery from CATL (see this video), but I think they are comparable.

There recently was a story about clothes made from living fungi that can kind of self repair. Made me think of that again, such bioengineered types of material could be great for carpets or furniture too, if they were self cleaning and automatically regenerate any small damage.


They deserve to make some money from it. Mostly the original researchers that is. They had their wages to do their fucking job researching shit. Maybe we should have a kind of UN bonus system to reward outstanding research.
These companies take the research and all that it’s build on and use it for free to develop it into a product. Do a good job growing and selling them then, make money. But laws protecting them to create an artificial monopoly is unethical. It’s hard to build up a successful and efficient company, but monopolies practically invite them to be inefficient and garbage.


I see now way this could possibly go wrong. These genes already come from the wild. And these plants would spend lots of the energy they produce on glowing, which is cool for us but a severe disadvantage in the wild. And deer would probably think it’s hilarious to turn glowing plant into glowing poo.
It is possible they’d evolve some some kind of symbiotic relationship with animals over time. Small predatory animals like cats or ferrets might love to hunt in their light and keep them from getting eaten.

Especially if they further engineer brushes or small trees, like to glow strongest for a few hours after sundown. From my napkin math plants achieve something from 1% to 5% efficiency in converting sunlight into calories / chemical energy. I think that should be enough to provide low illumination to a small area around them.
Right now in order to put up an energy efficient streetlamp you need to dig in the earth to bury a cable (or have a big ass solar panel on top) and rely on high technology LED energy efficient lights. Now imagine just having to plant a seed. Such advanced biotechnology isn’t just a question of environmentalism and resource efficiency, it also has the potential to democratize the technology needed to have higher quality of life anywhere on earth. Imho universities should be making such useful seeds that can replace complex industry supply chains and make them available for free.


It’s really not well written, by classical standards. It’s very colorful and fun and entertaining. But the story and plot constantly use “deus ex machina”. Just try an summarize the actions and plot of the movie, it makes no sense whatsoever. Really the story is garbage, but the characters and adventure still makes it fun.
I think that is a feature of a many modern “web novels” or fan fiction. A sort of liberation of the shackles of good writing. Web novels democratized authorship in a way. We really have far more entertaining authors with much more talent than was made to believe (Tangent: A bit like porn today, now that everybody can do it on their own, from their home without some creepy porn producer, we have far better and more creative porn than ever). Most people are creative and pretty good as amateur writers. They just haven’t learned the craft of writing a good story lol (cannot be said about Rowlings though, she should have known better).
Why some things become a hit and others not is an unsolved question. If we could answer that, book publishing and movie studios would work very differently. Don’t ascribe to quality which can equally be ascribed to luck or marketing.
People have been trained by social media to hate pretty much anything on command these days. It doesn’t really matter what or who it is, there is always an audience to hate this or that. You’d think that at some point people would get that this is class warfare, but no.
