I will always miss it. I love the glass aesthetic. It never went out of style in my head.

42·8 months agoSide note: if you want to run a dedicated server and play on it with a cracked version (or just an offline mode or while MS services are down) edit the server.properties file and set
online-mode=falsefrom true. (Then restart the server if it was online)This wipes everyone’s inventories if there was already progress, so have everyone put their items in a chest before doing this. If you use modded, have everyone unclaim their chunks or any other username-bound items like teleporters with permission systems.
All of this can be redone, reclaimed, re-bound after the change happens. This effectively changes your in-game identities on a server from a Microsoft one to an offline one. This also makes it possible to evade username-based bans.

1·8 months agoyou can assign independent applications > I know you can do this in windows without needing an extra sound controller it’s in ‘Settings>system>Sound>Volume Mixer’
Yeah, but separate physical controls are beneficial when you have full-screen apps, are busy, don’t want to lose your place, or if you need to do it more frequently and quickly than the sound mixer allows.
Linux largely has this too, but in both OS’s it’s less convenient than reaching over and quickly pressing a button or sliding a slider in many scenarios.
Of course if you just need to edit these infrequently then that’s a perfectly good solution and there’s no reason to spend any money at all.

3·8 months agoYeah that one is pricey, but you can certainly get cheap ones for a fraction of the price. Most people don’t need the one I have, and smaller ones can serve the same purpose.
Unfortunately modrinth just doesn’t have the feature set and ease of use that curseforge does for creating, automating, and managing content. I don’t like it either, but until someone steps up and dethrones them as THE way to get content, they are the best platform, at least functionally.
The result of a mod creator uploading to modrinth and not curseforge is simply that their mod will not be included in all of the popular modpacks hosted on curseforge, which is a death sentence for download count and income.

47·8 months agoIf you have a desktop and not a laptop, it’s always a great idea to get a separate sound controller. Either a dac/amp for nice headphones, volume controls on a wireless headset, or even buy a sound mixer like the rodecaster duo so you can assign independent applications to each physical slider on the mixer. I do that last one and it’s such a quality of life improvement if you use your PC a lot.
All of these options can’t be seen from Spotify.
Maybe it’s for the helmet

2·9 months agoThey really do! It’s nice to read something that’s clearly hand crafted and high quality, especially the big news roundups that you do, as opposed to the usual SEO slop most news sites have. It’s a treat every time a new one comes out.

3·9 months agoOn lemmy, I just browse “all” then filter out anything I don’t want instead of the opposite. I don’t use Mastodon much, or any twitter-style platform. As for videos I still use YouTube, just through the FreeTube application on desktop.
Edit: one thing I do follow is the gaming news posts by this person, who puts a whole lot of effort into them: @PerfectDark@lemmy.world

2·9 months agoHonestly that’s kind of what lemmy is, in a roundabout way. I think you are right, but actually getting people to engage with that would be difficult. Today, word of mouth with younger people mostly revolves around individual things inside centralized platforms like a TikTok meme or something. I think in addition to independent sources of content, there needs to be a cultural change in how everyone accesses content. That’s the hard part.

5·9 months agoYes you said it better than I could have. Not only the perverse incentive, but also just the way ads have annihilated the usability of the internet for the average user. I know some sites can’t exist without ads, but the web now is an unusable mess of for-profit click bait SEO slop and the average non-profit oriented enthusiast with a website for something has a harder time than ever existing because of it.
I am not smart enough to know what to change, but I know something has to change. Short of a complete upheaval of the current web, the ones profiting off the current model will do everything in their power to make sure nothing changes.
This is why I’m conflicted. AI destroying ad revenue is that upheaval that could be fast and powerful enough to disrupt the status quo, but at what cost?

453·9 months agoOn one hand, I don’t generate ad revenue for anyone in the first place and would love to see the ad-supported web model collapse. On the other hand, I don’t like that AI is destroying things. I’m conflicted.
Just shave your head. Most people can rock it. I shave my head and I am not balding at all, because I like the look and just can’t be bothered to “care for” my hair.
All hail the e-waste pile. I have so many monitors, laptops, desktops, mice and keyboards from several of my old jobs that were otherwise going to be trashed.
I can also attest to the quality of brother (or at least I could 10-15 years ago)
That’s impressive! Mine is a laser printer so it’s a bit different, in my experience inkjets are prone to issues so congratulations on having it so long!

Might be a big change but look into unraid. Dead simple. I’ll never use anything else for self hosting.
