What’s the harm if I post “test” under a post without comments and then delete this comment one second later, without anyone having engaged with it?

Makes sense, thanks for explaining! I don’t know much about ActivityPub, but you explained this point well. Also good to know that upvotes and downvotes are public… 😄

Yeah, well… Better not think about that too much 😂

I don’t wanna go back to Reddit. I know what you mean when you say “nothing is ever truly deleted”, but there is a difference between a comment being displayed as “deleted by creator” and the comment not being displayed at all while still existing under the hood.

True. But the fact that a removed comment in a post is displayed as “deleted by creator” is a choice of the Fediverse protocol, isn’t it?

Yeah I totally get that. But what about comments I make on a thread that noone has replied to. Completely deleting those wouldn’t harm anyone.

Fair point, I guess. Also a bit scary. I sometimes read what I used to post on Facebook when I was 12 or 13 years old… 🤣

I can understand it if the comment is part of a thread. But I think comments without replies should be fully deletable.
The moments I have been disappointed by Linux were the moments I learned most about hardware and software.
Linux made me switch the WiFi card of my computer, which is something I’ve never done before and would have deemed “impossible”.
Linux is like a teacher that sometimes slaps you on the hands, but who is always helping you to expand your knowledge.
I want to use open-source software, developed from people for people. I don’t want corporates to exploit my data and take away my freedom.

Everyone, thank you so much for your helpful comments… ❤️ I have learned a lot these two days.
I looked at rsync and borg, and I have ended up using Pika as a GUI for Borg. I am now backing up my data with Pika to two external hard disks over SSH. Both of these external hard disks are encrypted with Pika/Borg. What a wonderful tool!

Wow, I just used this tutorial. rsync is amazing, and this actually makes everything so much easier. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

The only reason is that I am a noob 😄 Thanks, I will take at look at this!

keep the key safe
This might be a dumb question, but can I assume the keys are safe in the standard .ssh directory on Linux? Is there anything I should explicitly do to secure the private key?

Thank you. For now, I won’t try to connect to the server from the internet. I want to learn more about VPNs before I try anything like this. I am very paranoid when it comes to security, so I don’t want to risk anything… 😄
Why do you use Google?

Are you referring to the CLAUDE files?
I don’t get it, how does that hack/scam work?

I was scrolling down to find the obligatory “Fuck Spez” comments but got disappointed. Probably moderated heavily.
Hmm, but why does a social media need to be an immutable storage? I feel like I’m missing something here.
I know some people are against any form of censorship and yes, I see the problem with the question of who can decide what gets deleted when. I’m totally on board here. But is “nothing should ever be deleted” really the best approach?
Genuine question: if someone doxes your address on Lemmy, wouldn’t you want to be able to get it deleted?
