Awww, poor baby. <3
I’ve never heard of halloween fireworks before.
Sounds like a UK thing. I’ve never once heard fireworks around Halloween here in Texas
Canadian here. Fireworks are very common on Halloween. This year I took my dogs into the mountains for the evening to avoid them.
It’s because of Guy Fawkes Night so Halloween gets bundled in to the occasion. Basically 2 weeks of on/off fireworks :\
Assholes taking every opportunity to make noise that irritates some and scares others.
Our girl is petrified of fireworks and we still haven’t found a way to keep her calm.
In the UK, fireworks season runs from the weekend before Halloween until the weekend after 5th Nov, with near constant loud bangs at all hours of the evening and lots still happening at night, so she’s absolutely miserable.
This year, we have drugs from the vets, a thunder vest, happy hoodie and have built her a blanket fort. She seems to be able to fall asleep best when there’s loud music being played, so we used a Babymetal playlist during the peak hours of 7-9. She also seems to enjoy stoner metal, so Sleep’s Dopesmoker worked well. Last year was Slipknot.
Here’s her in happier times:

My heart goes out to metal dog. Best girl.
Poor boy, I had a dog that was terrified of fireworks, she would shiver every new years night as the fireworks went off.
One year we decided to try to buy a thundershirt for her, we expected it might help a just a bit but she was completely different, she was her usually goofy self even during the hights of the fireworks, it was amazing how much it helped her.
The only issue we had was that she was very reluctant to have it taken off when it needed a wash
Is it common at your place to have fireworks at Halloween?
Doesn’t that destroy the spooky atmosphere?Very common here. There was a whole bunch on halloween night.
ls this rooted in some older tradition, like the “getting rid of the old year’s ghosts” on New Year’s Day, or something new?
It’s rooted in the tradition of being a little shit who has got their hands on some fireworks illegally and wants to set them off in their back garden because it’s the weekend and sometime vaguely around Halloween and Christmas lol
There were even fireworks on Wednesday night!
In the UK Halloween is right before bonfire night and it’s not unusual for the fireworks to start a bit early.
Sooo… What’s the lore behind “bonfire night”?
Special occassion?Wow, I had honestly never heard of that holiday before!
And do I understand the Wikipedia article correctly that this is also the root of “Thanksgiving”?
That would actually be quite funny! 😆BTW, we also light huge bonfires here in Germany around that time of year (11.11), but without any fireworks. It’s to celebrate St. Martin’s Day.
Here in the US, where I’m at, it was tradition, not sure if it still is, to go around egging people and cars on “devil’s night,” the night before halloween.
Unless you are from detroit, in which case they burn down houses instead. Often the many abandoned houses taken over by drug gangs and crackheads and the like. Entire blocks have just one house on them, mounds where the old houses used to be. From 1.5 million in the city proper pre 1960’s era riots, (they rioted before it was popular for other reasons than the big ones which they also participated in after MLK got shot,) to less than 800k people now. It’s a huge city square mileage too. Idk if 100 square miles, but at least 10 deep and close that that wide I think.
Desensitising dogs to fireworks is possible, and a worthy endeavour.
Lovely dog btw, makes me want to get back into fostering.
My dog doesn’t give a crap about fireworks. She’s just chilling at the window, the ears perking up for a second when the first sound hits, and then goes back to sleep lmao.
I bought one of those pheromone plug-in things this year and it’s worked a treat.
Consider yourself lucky, mine runs towards loud noises, and fireworks. She wants to be where the action is. She barks defiantly at lightning sometimes if we get caught in a downpour. Her breed is like that, I’ve seen 2 vids on big social media of this breed grabbing lit fireworks, one a volcano spouting sparks 4 feet high or whatever and bringing it into the doghouse.
Your dog, when loud noises:

You have a Mal too?
Mine is a small terrier, don’t want to get too specific.
Calming music ftw. It indeed helps a lot.
I have gotten neither a dog nor cat to appreciate music in any way shape or form, they will respond to your mood that is affected by the music from my experience.
Birds on the other hand, they are musically more inclined than we are in some ways. I had a conyur, a small type of parrot, 30 year lifespan I think on these, he was adopted after his old partner (person,) died, that did seem to enjoy music, and I would share bird songs I remembered with him and he was very interested. He was also a total dick and would bite you for funsies then run into one of his lairs, but that’s another story. As is my sharing of wine, beer/ale, and mixed drinks like gin and tonic with him. He would drink a bit, then cut himself off and just throw it around with his beak.
