it’s the narrative the cult couches their statements in. “no no, I’m not for AI, it’s just the inevitable future and if you don’t start using it now you’re gonna be a slave so of course I’m using it now!”
As someone who is actually anti-AI, I have yet to find a single task I would need to use AI for, and have been able to strip it out of most of my daily life. With how easy it’s been, I can’t trust these “afraid of AI but using it” types at all.
I’m on the same page as you.
Many of my colleagues in academia uses LLMs daily. Honestly, I haven’t found a task that I couldn’t do without it.
They drank the kool-aid, I guess.
AI data centers have a serious fucking environmental problem. It’s obscene. And just so they can train it to predict what might be plausible based in what you say? I honestly think it hit the plateau in 2024. When it isn’t shoved in my face on web searches I try to give it a chance with the open source ones from a years ago that can run actually on your laptop or from brave which runs it on smaller servers in house and I again see in in face every time on it and duckduckgo, and it’s just not reliable at all. And when it’s a more right than wrong (god forbid you fact check it) it is jusey regurgitating what the search results say, and the websites get no views or revenue or credit. I feel like the most it is good for is fishing for ideas to try, but literally everyone is encouraged to use it like it’s some oracle and I really think it is making them dumber. Honestly, oracles from ancient Greece were probably more accurate.
