I’ve just received some upsetting news from a family member. I’m feeling big feelings. Can anyone recommend me some music to have on while I’m sitting with these?
Currently I have these songs on my playlist, so any recommendations in a similar vibe would really help:
Tori Amos - Black-Dove (January)
Porcupine Tree - Collapse the Light Into Earth
Eluvium - Copia
Nine Inch Nails - Your Touch
Porcupine Tree - Heartattack in a Lay-by
Nine Inch Nails - Hope We Can Again
The Ballað of The Broken Birdie Records by múm is my personal pick. It’s pretty dark but extremely soft which makes for a very cathartic experience in my opinion.
Musk Ox’s self-titled album is 5 tracks of very peaceful, introspective classical guitar neofolk with some cello and flute thrown in. Very beautiful, very calming.
Thank you, listening now and I like it.
Good, I’m glad! All their other stuff is just as good, just sometimes with more or less classical instruments.
Japanese band, but the song is 100% in English. There are versions of this video available with subtitles in other languages, including Japanese, but the one I linked has English subtitles. AFAIK there isn’t a base, “no subtitles” version (though there should be, so others can make their own subtitles).
They wrote the song for the nuclear power plant disaster in Japan, but they wrote it so it could be enjoyed and its message received by anyone suffering from any kind of tragedy, of any size.
The song’s message is simply, no matter what the darkness is, be the light (for others). The last part of the song, which is spoken, goes, “Some days just pass by, and some days are unforgettable. We can’t choose the reason why. But we can choose what to do from the day after. So with that hope… with that… determination… let’s make tomorrow… a brighter, and better day.”
Thank you. I enjoyed this.
Do you want to cry it out? I have in the past. If you want to explore your feelings, whether it be feeling the anxiety of what’s to come, or processing grief and crying it out:
Xiu Xiu
Albums: A Promise Fabulous Muscles Fag Patrol The Air Force Unclouded Sky Forget
When my best friend died in a horrible way (the third best friend I’ve had die in a similar way) I didn’t cry. I didn’t feel anything. I just coasted through my days, through their funeral, through hangouts, through work. A few weeks later, I was listening to Unclouded Sky at work (I’ve heard it heaps before) and a 20 seconds into one song, I just out wailing at my desk and ran out of the building and went home. I needed that. It was extremely cathartic.
Time by Tom Waits
Finite = Alright by David Byrne. I find this song very comforting in an infinite, uncaring universe,
Cursive - Domestica.
It’s a concept album that tells the complete story of the end of a relationship/divorce between two characters “Sweetie” and “Pretty Boy”.
If it’s a situation where you need to vent your anger then I’d say Alice in Chains - Dirt, Slipknot - debut self titled album, The Refused - The Shape of Punk to come.
was gonna say Lorna Shore, because they dont write songs, they write feelings (Glenddale comes to mind) but, theyre, a bit heavier than what youve listed. https://youtu.be/2pScWD7ay1I
for a much lighter sound, I like a lot of, Hey, Nothing. Theyre stuff has helped me cry and recover. https://youtu.be/xzo2jIFWs38
I came here to recommend Boys for Pele by Tori. The whole album is the perfect emotional salve.
