I used to schedule all these reminders for things I intended to do. They just made me irritated and feel bad as I kept delaying / rescheduling them. I don’t do that anymore, for the most part. I’ve stopped keeping track of the things I won’t do. If I think of it, I might take care of it. This only works because I’m now in a relationship with someone who makes sure I do the things that matter most.

20·2 days agoAs many free alternatives as there were before the rampant vibecoding, it seems that this growing collection of tools is not only functional, but a message to the large companies as well. Most of these apps are still far from what they intend to replace, however, so we’ll have to see how deep this message cuts.
Blood in the water for Adobe. Acrobat is a steaming pile of garbage. My org worked with their engineering team to track down a bug that we reported. They affirmed the bug (app hangs on launch) and then took four to five months fixing it.
I’ve worked in software engineering. I know that debugging, patching, testing, verifying is difficult. But the enterprise license costs a lot and that was a very long time with a crippling bug. The only satisfactory answer (to me) is that they don’t feel urgency because they are entrenched without real competition. They need to wake up.
(No, I don’t think vibe-coded Acrobat replacements will unseat them. I think LLM-powered real devs will come for them because the moat is smaller.)

Technology@lemmy.world•Kagi is ending development on Orion for Linux and Windows :(English
133·10 days agoI think this is the right move. They started on MacOS. They expanded to Linux and Win for reasons that were unclear (to me). If they can’t keep all three going, open-sourcing the code is appropriate. If people want to keep going, awesome. If not, well… And they refocus their resources to the platform that they presumably consider their primary home, else they wouldn’t have started with MacOS first.
I have Orion installed and occasionally use it. But I’m also a browser junky and can’t resist trying every new browser I read about. (I’m posting this from the recently announced Search browser and it’s using impressively low system resources. I recommend test driving it if you’re curious. I’m not affiliated in any way).
Software developers are on Mastadon, though. Big time.
My kitty would have you believe she’s never had a meal.
That’s really pretty beautiful.

2·11 days agoMine bitcoin! Just kidding.
I dunno, install an interesting OS or distro and use it as a throwaway sandbox for learning. Or turn it into a makeshift router (not via installing pfsense or other router OS, but by configuring network services by hand in Debian or Ubuntu). I tend to want to use redundant hardware to learn new skills.
I imagine the women I would want to meet would skip over profiles with photos like these the same way I would skip profiles with women holding guns, posing next to sports cars, or taking selfies in the mirrors of public bathrooms. All of those were automatic NOs. It’s a big advert telling the world who you are and I’m grateful they were there to warn me.

22·14 days agoI’m pretty sure Ed Zitron has been keeping pretty good accounting numbers. Whether you think his predictions are right or wrong (the hype has outlived even my expectations), I think he’s right about how much debt has been generated vs how much cash will be needed to service that debt and it seems highly unlikely that we aren’t letting these companies pretend there’s a pot of gold under every blade of grass to our own detriment.
If it didn’t make sense, that’s because it’s early and I just woke up.

He’s so stupid it’s astounding.
