100% right on for me. It took me years, YEARS, to get my mother to where she would check if USB peripherals were plugged in before asking me to come over and find out why it was broken. Even the occasional slight complications with Plex get her to where she doesn’t use it for months unless I fix it for her. Jellyfin just ain’t happening with her.

Pretty much. My grandmother made something called tater tot casserole: a mix of ground beef, frozen tater tots, canned beans, and mystery spices that went stale sometime in the last ice age. This was covered with about half a kilo of cheese and baked until a point she couldn’t quite articulate but “just knew”.

If you have legionella in your hot water, the issue isn’t going to come from drinking it, but inhaling it when you shower. As long as you don’t have a dead leg in your water system or a circuit that stagnates for long periods of time, legionella is pretty much a non-issue in the vast majority of homes, even older homes.

I had an elderly aunt that made “oyster stew” on special occasions. The recipe was as follows:

One gallon of 2% milk
One 16 oz. jar raw oysters with juice
Salt and pepper to taste

That’s literally all that was in it. She’d mix it together, heat until steaming, then serve. Just a big pot of hot, oyster scented, salty milk, served with oyster crackers. Everyone hated it and none of her children carried on the tradition.

That recipe deserved to die.

There’s something so comforting about learning other people have the same struggles I do. I’ve had to do the same thing regarding “optimizing” my routine, which is one of my favorite ways to procrastinate.

Methylphenidate isn’t meth at all - it’s ritalin/concerta. “Meth” is amphetamine (Adderall) with a substituted methyl group (methamphetamine). This increases its ability to dissolve in lipids, so more enters the brain and at a greater rate.

By mass, methylphenidate is about half the strength of amphetamine. Amphetamine is about 1/5 the strength of methamphetamine, so methylphenidate is about 1/10 the strength of methamphetamine. Amphetamines and methylphenidate also work by different mechanisms, so they have different effects, making the relative strength an imperfect comparison.

Methamphetamine actually is prescribed on rare occasion under the brand name Desoxyn, usually as a last ditch effort for extreme, treatment-resistant ADHD.

100% this. I have routines mapped out so I don’t have to figure everything out again once my mind decides it’s time to let me function for a bit.

Even science majors and grads don’t always get it at first.

I taught students and trained junior researchers during and after grad school. When I’d catch lab assistants doing lopsided centrifuge loads, especially in the big floor-standing centrifuges (I even caught one genius sitting on it to dampen the vibration), we’d take a trip to the physics department for a quick lecture on the amount of energy contained in their spinning samples compared to the amount of energy required for a plastic centrifuge tube to fracture and penetrate a human skull.

Gosling’s use of an unbalanced centrifuge made me exclaim “No!” aloud, though.

I was raised in an exceedingly rural area of an already rural state. My school district was rated amongst the worst in the nation, so my experience was more indicative of the worst 1980s US had to offer. It was bad then, but not usually that bad.

No kidding. For anyone else who might wait 5 minutes for it to load, just unmute it. It starts playing immediately.

My second grade teacher taught us the civil war was because of a disagreement over state’s rights.

The same teacher marked me and a few other students down for completing a subtraction assignment using negative numbers. She explained we were supposed to be confused and write that we couldn’t do it.

Edit: I forgot one! My third grade teacher marked me down for not knowing how much a hen weighed. It wasn’t a joke. Apparently there was a rule of thumb for estimating chicken weight. Any kids who weren’t raised on a farm missed the question.

I have mast cell issues, so a bit similar. I still get the occasional food flare up, but just giving my guts a break works wonders.
