Years ago I realized I was drinking six 24 oz. cups of coffee a day - which is literally MORE THAN A GALLON OF FUCKING COFFEE. One of those cups was even right before going to bed, which is a sign of how much tolerance I had built up to caffeine. Now I just drink one 8 oz. cup every morning and that’s it, and my desire to slap the shit out of every human being I encounter has gone way down.

I remember trying to use one edition of MSDN (MicroSloth Developer Network if I recall correctly) on my laptop a few years ago. Whoever had developed the UI for it had been using a giant monitor because on a small laptop screen the article contents in the right-hand detail panel didn’t word-wrap correctly, so reading the article required constant scrolling left-and-right with the horizontal scroll bar (which sometimes didn’t even show up). For six months I just got in the habit of copying-and-pasting the contents into a simple text editor so that I could actually read the shit normally.
I’ve long advocated making developers use the shittiest equipment and no extra monitors, just to ensure that what we build actually works on most machines. I’m not a monster: the money saved could be used to give developers ACTUAL FUCKING OFFICES.

I used to work for a west coast tech giant. Their early retirement package was: “you are retiring now, goodbye” along with a severance just large enough to disqualify me from unemployment. At least I didn’t have to spend months pretending to look for work.

This is exactly what happened to me.
They will spend as little money on you as possible to make you go away.
I actually got a severance from my big company, first time I ever got anything for being let go. TBF it totaled about $100 less than what I would have gotten for unemployment benefits; this prevented me from qualifying for unemployment, but it did mean I didn’t have to pretend to be looking for work for six months to get the money.
I knew my layoff was coming because they let me do absolutely fucking nothing for six months.
A toaster oven can do most things that a full-sized oven can do.
And then imagine paying another $10 for Uber Eats to deliver it to you cold.

At the start of every summer, I rediscover grape soda and I’m like “holy shit this stuff is great”. And then about 7 cans into the case I remember why I stopped drinking it. It’s kind of funny that it’s only ever available in the store brand, never in a “real” brand.
I used to love asking for a can of Diet Coke … and then seeing everybody around me with that “shit, I could have gotten a whole can?” look on their faces.
