Technology@lemmy.world•EV Charging Doesn't Need to Be as Fast as Gas, Ionna CEO SaysEnglish
21·6 days agoGrocery store chargers are usually Level 2. I can typically recharge enough to cover my round trip to the grocery store while I’m shopping, but you’d have to camp there for 9+ hours to full charge.

22·10 days agoPeople who seem passionate about PyLova don’t seem to grasp that blocking/filtering weirdos is the whole point of PieFed. I don’t understand the overall reaction to PieFed doing what it does. PieFed was never meant to be an “anything goes” type of thing.
On the surface I love that there’s another fediverse project to consider, but everything I’ve read from developers and supporters of PyLova seems like an overreaction. Lots of personal attacks and overall childish behavior. It’s ok to have a different view of how social media should work, but for me I’m going to hang with the adults in the room.
If I wanted unfiltered social media full of misinformation, conspiracy theories, Russian Propaganda, etc. I’d go to Lemmy or Twitter. I don’t want that, so I use PieFed.

Technology@lemmy.world•Reddit is killing RSS feeds and ending public API access because of AI botsEnglish
39·11 days agoThe reddit community that I’m still sort of active in relies on RSS in order to run and judge contests. We have a portal which sucks comments in via RSS because they revoked the API key which was used for the same purpose.
Without RSS, we’ll either have to come up with some other way to pull in reddit comments, or force everyone to use PieFed.
My vote is for the latter, of course!
With the successful recitation of the secret chant, your acceptance to fraternal order of crimping is now complete.

Technology@lemmy.world•FAA tees up $875M AI tool to help manage air traffic congestionEnglish
3·21 days agoATC could see both of them no problem, but ATC is often overloaded and will pawn off responsibility to the pilots to maintain separation.
Legally speaking, the controller in that accident did their job correctly. The helicopter pilots assured the controller multiple times that they would pass behind the jet.
The current hot topic is ADSB IN. Most aircraft are required to have ADSB OUT these days, but very few aircraft (especially airliners) have recievers to display that info.
It’s direct, line of site communication from aircraft to aircraft. Exact position in relation to each other, right on your nav display.
My understanding is that it’s an upgrade to the current situational awareness provided by TCAS. TCAS is wonderful but broke down in the DCA crash because [I don’t remember the real reason so I’d just be guessing here]. TCAS should have saved the day, but there was something missing (probably the helicopter transponder wasn’t “participating” in the TCAS conversation that airplanes usually have (the TCAS computers, not the pilots)).
Would ADSB IN have helped prevent DCA? Yes, assuming the helicopter had it they would have had better situational awareness. If the helicopter had their transponder turned off, though, it’s not clear to me if they would be broadcasting ADSB for the airliner to see.
I use Backblaze B2 for off-site backup.
I recently starting using Proxmox Backup Server to back up my virtual machines.
I have Restic scheduled to back up the PBS folder, photos, etc. multiple times per week. My restic script excludes large replaceable things like video files.
Backblaze announced recently that they’re switching to everything being encrypted on their end. It’s already encrypted coming from my server, but I guess it’ll be double encrypted? The only caveat is it only applies to new objects, so I plan on making a new bucket and starting my backup from scratch.
I, for one, value my family photos more than a replaceable, insured box made of wood with electrical wires running all over the place.

43·2 months agoThere are two of these in my little town. One of them was right outside my neighborhood and it got cut down earlier this month and I’m super happy about it.
I posted about them on F-book (it’s either that or Nextdoor when trying to reach people locally) when they were first installed and there were a lot of boot lickers. “It helps the police so I’m all for it”, etc.
Someone else posted more recently the the mood has shifted substantially since a year ago. People are more aware and more upset about them.
What sort of car are you a fan of? I sort of felt the same way but then Subaru (by way of being owned by Toyota) came out with an electric station wagon that mostly looks like a normal car. It’s great.

3·2 months agoWe stopped letting our kid watch Paw Patrol on TV because it sort of turned him into an a-hole. So I’m not really a fan of the show. Too much energy.
But, I took him to this yesterday. He really liked it, and I thought it was relatively well done. It seemed to have less “energy” than the TV series.
There were some cute parts and one part that was funny enough to get a small giggle out of me, but overall it’s still an action movie.
Meme aside, is this based on inflation? Some sort of global market?
If it’s inflation it’s not accurate. 100 2026 dollars is equivalent to 70 2013 dollars (not $50).
Just trying to fact check the math. I’m fun at parties.
I don’t know if it has better than average battery life, but I only need to charge my phone when I’m sleeping. I only charge it to 80%, too. Sure it’s better to have a headphone jack, but when life gives you lemons, etc.
USB to headphone jack dongle is how I roll. The have actual chips in them so you can get the quality you want.
