Technology@lemmy.world•The U.S. spent $30 billion to ditch textbooks for laptops and tablets: The result is the first generation less cognitively capable than their parentsEnglish
51·12 days agoI’m not an expert on this, but I have listened to people talk who are and claim that you can pretty clearly link cognitive decline with the introduction of technology effectively everywhere.
I’m sure it’s not as clear as “tech bad” but it does seem like screen time and deferring the manual parts of learning to computers is not great for us.

601·12 days agoI get what you’re saying, but this isn’t a dig at Gen Z. For as long as we’ve been testing, which is like 50 years I think, the new generation has outperformed the previous one and that’s a good thing.
Having this generation underperform means that we have failed them and we need to figure out exactly how we fucked up. The evidence is really strong that technology in the classroom is a significant contributor.
Oh hahaha it got cropped.
You missed the beginning of this transaction, where Phillip sends Sparta a missive asking if he should come as friend or enemy, and the response he got was “neither”.

18·19 days ago“I don’t have anything to hide” is such an insidious little lie. A colloquial fib we feel compelled to utter as a mock defense, like asserting innocence will assuage suspicion.
We all have something to hide. Probably many, many things to hide. Even just in the narrow context of the law, there are hundreds of thousands of laws that apply to any one of us at any given time, and you are almost certainly breaking some of them without even knowing it.
Personal security through privacy is so very, very important. I wish more people could see that.

201·21 days agoYou can’t pull one over on these kids. They have tons of free time and none of the responsibility of adulthood, they’re gonna bypass whatever the fuck you put in front of them.
I was that kid that refused to be constrained and I’m so fucking proud of this generation for carrying on the legacy.

People Twitter@sh.itjust.works•Self burns. Those are rare!!English
16·22 days agoYep. The only way to justify the death penalty in a system we know for a fact convicts people we later prove to be innocent is to be ok with executing some innocent people.
I’m very comfortable saying that even a single innocent person killed by the state is too high a cost to pay.

31·24 days agoI don’t agree with passing off their behavior as “cultural”. I am ashamed of men because some of them are reprehensible, and some of them want to ignore how reprehensible those ones are or explain it away.
I choose to embrace feeling deeply ashamed at how we’ve allowed the worst of us to form the general opinion of us and vocalize that routinely.
Fuck their insecurities, if they want to be able to go up to a woman without “getting her drink splashed in their face” maybe they should focus harder on fixing the problem so women can generally feel safe with us.

31·24 days agoI didn’t say that I was ashamed of myself, I said I was ashamed of men and the association they cast on me.
You’re kinda enabling that behavior by advocating against vocalizing how shitty it is.

302·25 days agoIt’s fun being deeply ashamed of your gender because some of us are filth and scum.
These fuckers harm everyone with their actions. Wish we could do something actionable about it.
Many years ago I sometimes got stuck in a work truck with a guy who would play nothing but conservative bullshit radio, and it was insufferable.
Nothing but a non-stop stream of hate and bile and misinformation, and so many ads for products I would be embarrassed to be seen buying.
As long as it doesn’t require much effort.
