I guess that’s what I get for learning French during the age of typewriters (my formal French education ended in 1981 and I’ve only spoken --never written-- it since then).

The whole picture looks bad, like an AI rendering from several years ago.
I don’t remember if German rules are the same as French, but in French you don’t need to include accents when something is written in capital letters.
In my experience, Japanese baking tends to look perfect but fall very short on flavor and texture.
They also generally like things less sweet and less rich (i.e. butter, cream) than westerners and cheese is not even worth the calories.
C’mon, weren’t you blown away by the (at the time) novel digitized voice? “He slimed me!”
Of course, escape from Castle Wolfenstein did it even earlier (“was ist los, was ist los” and “ach, mein leben!”).

Technology@lemmy.world•Datacenters in space are a terrible, horrible, no good idea.English
3·2 months agoThere’s also the issue that around once a year the two planets will be on opposite sides of the sun. Not only would you have a lag of close to 3 hours, but communication would be completely impossible for a month or so at a time.

9·2 months agoYes, but the two-and-a-half hour lag each way would be a killer.
You could check out FolderFort. Sometimes they have lifetime pricing. I paid something like $170 for 3TB lifetime.
They have SFTP access in beta.

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Disgraced Andrew insists royal staff call him 'sir' and fetch beerEnglish
2·2 months agoNot to mention that the current royal family was originally named Saxe-Coburg, changing it to a more palatable “Windsor” during the first World war (which was fought against subjects of the German Kaiser, who was a cousin of the British king).

6·2 months agoI heard a very interesting argument that if the Royal family can remove Andrew from the line of succession, then the line itself can be manipulated, and anyone else could be added. In that case, what is the point of having a royal family?
Except that this time we won’t have to cross an ocean to get to the Nazis.
It may be because the Canadians were well known in both wars for not taking prisoners. That’s not true in every engagement, of course, but in Normandy, after a number of Canadian soldiers were taken prisoner and then executed, their comrades would execute any Germans they captured.
You probably also don’t know that the country with the most volunteer soldiers in World War II was India, than 2 million men.
Or that both Canada and New Zealand had mutinies where men refused to go overseas to fight.
There’s a lot of fascinating stuff. I recommend the podcast We Have Ways of Making You Talk, for an informative and entertaining look at almost every facet of the war. They are up to something like episode #800 now.

3·2 months agoYou might want to look at something like Drupal as an alternative to WordPress. Drupal tends toward a lot more open source for its plugins (which they call modules). As a developer myself, I also find it better engineered than WordPress, although maybe that’s just because I used Drupal more.

People Twitter@sh.itjust.works•There are two types of X-Files episodes.
3·3 months agoMy favorite thing about the X-Files was the spin-off called Millennium, whose second season was some of the best TV I have ever watched. It even did crossovers with The X-Files, like “Jose Chung’s Doomsday Defense”, a blistering satire of Scientology.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What band do you think doesn't deserve the hype or fandom?
1·3 months agoI think they should be upfront with people that when they go to her concert, they’re not hearing her sing live, at least most of the time, and they are not hearing the band play live.
It should be obvious that no singer could do several 3-hour shows a week for more than a year, and not have it affect her voice.
Just check out the Wings of Pegasus YouTube channel, to see where two different concerts in different countries had exactly the same music (vocal and instrumental).
I know several people who spent thousands of dollars to see her in concert. I’m not going to go out of my way to ruin the memory for them. They got the experience they wanted. But I’m also not going to pretend that it was a musical experience.

Does anyone remember when Kurt Waldheim, UN Secretary General for 9 years and President of Austria for 6, turned out to be a former nazi? Whoops ie!
