  • People who are being exploited are always highly targeted for propaganda and manipulation, explicitly because they have the most revolutionary potential and their position in society makes them more vulnerable to the sales pitch that maybe they can be allowed a seat at the table, even if its a second class one. Uncle tom is a term that’s been around for ages for a reason

Its good to remember our compassion for folks who are being exploited. No one is immune to propaganda, ESPECIALLY those who come from classes where access to higher education is less common

  • Thank you! ❤️ I think my client also just doesnt handle cross instance links like at all I’m realizing, I prolly need to go open an issue about that

This whole situation sucks. I just switched to piefed cause I wasn’t in love with my last instance. Probably I’ll stay where I am for some time (and I do like the folks running my current instance, even if the .zip domain is a bad idea), but this does sour me on piefed a bit. With the .ml folks its mostly how they run their own instance, and they take ownership of their ideology. The issues folks are talking about here feels potentially like it spills out onto other people/instances more, and I don’t love that

Maybe I’ll try mbin, or at least set up a lemmy.zip account in addition to my current piefed one

  • Thats for the reccomendations! ☺️

I really wanna try tvp at some point but haven’t seen it around at the places I shop, I’ll have to search for where I can get some

Lentil soup has been high up on my list of things to try. Daal too, I’m curious what its like. I only tried lentils in like the last year but I really like the green ones I’ve had so far- I’m hoping to get some brown lentils for the mujadara some time cause I think I’d like them better for that dish than the green

Thank you for taking the time to type out your thoughts ☺️ hope you have a lovely day!

  • Gonna be really honest, transphobia is very important and its important that we be vigilant for it on the fediverse, and, I’m really not super convinced thats the “obvious” reasons he unlisted them

I should be very clear- he sounds like an asshole for what you’re describing. Thats not okay. That being said

The blahaj instance is still listed there. From the rest of the thread it sounds like he has tons of beef with the two instances in question for a variety of specific reasons. I don’t really follow these things but it sounds as though he is unjustified for at least some of that beef, and has generally handled some shit poorly. But the idea that this is lashing out at trans people specifically seems ill substantiated, and honestly not a very realistic explanation

Actively persecuting people and allowing harm to come to them are generally different rungs on that ladder, and it sounds like he has allowed harm to come to trans folks through failures to moderate appropriately, and has potentially participated in a level of mistreatment (again, I really dont follow these things, I’m just here to chat with folks and look at art), but unlisting entire instances because they include or advocate for trans folks would be a really big escalation

It seems there are much more likely explanations for why he defederated those instances. At most it’s possible his issues around trans folks colored his perception and made him more willing to ultimately delist them. To me it seems like this is an escalation of a different greivance with him, moreso than an escalation of his mistreatment of trans folks

  • I’m subbed to that comm specifically for inspiration ☺️ I’ll have to keep an eye out for your username in particular- feeling like this is a place with actual folks I see regularly and can say hello to makes me happy :)

Out of curiosity, do you have any “incidentally vegan” faves? Like dishes that are already vegan, or that are super close with minimal modification?

So far my two dishes I’m really happy with are chickpea curry (just made it with coconut milk for the first time so its totally vegan now ☺️) and mujadara (I’ve been making it with a Greek yogurt sauce as topping, but I wanna try making a tahini sauce at some point. Its just more expensive 😅)

Or honestly I’d also welcome any easy but tasty dishes, I find a lot of recipe websites wanna suggest super elaborate stuff but I kinda struggle to keep up with eating and making food, so simple staple dishes really help, and those would also probably have the biggest impact in displacing meals I’d otherwise eat that have animal products

As someone who is currently learning more vegan dishes specifically so I can reduce my animal product intake- yeah 100%. Its honestly really frustrating. That being said, venting is messy since its important for people to be able to express their frustration with people not getting why their passion subject is important, but its not good to practice bitterness for everyone who doesnt already get it. Most vegans didn’t show up in the world that way, and everyone starts in a different place

Open source and free license shit is the same way. The solution to wanting the world to be kinder and better to people is usually not to be worse to the people standing in front of you

Personally I find sharing your excitement about something with no expectation others be interested more productive. And if folks are open to it, you can cook them your favorite vegan dish you’ve been working on. Or help them set up a fedi account, even if they still have twitter. Or show them your sweet linux setup you’re proud of.

I think it helps to let people share in your passion. It works a lot better than shame :)

  • Absolutely fascinating, thanks for explaining!

I have messy feelings on policing. I once felt it was an institution with the potential to be a positive and important one, if it were to go through enough reform. But I have more recently learned that sociological research generally doesn’t support the notion that its an effective intervention for crime barring one particular form of policing (I think it was regular patrolling?) And it can absolutely contribute to the actual root causes of crime as we understand them academically (poverty, systemic disenfranchisement/systemic disinvestment)

I think in general I’m also reaching the conclusion I think carceral justice is a really dysfunctional and counterproductive way to handle harms, but I also feel its important for there to be people investigating who is responsible for harms.

And I’m not entirely sure how I see those things being synthesized just yet.

As always, thanks for teaching us stuff and giving us the benefit of learning from how things have been different and similar throughout history :)
