Like if your vegan anarchist grandma and vegan anarchist dad were the same person.

I am an engineer (closer to toot toot then clicky clacky) cosplaying as a farmer in unceded aninstanabe territory in eastern ontario.

Pronouns: she/they

Maybe the real vegan theory club were the friends we made along the way ✨

  • The biochar part is a detail, all the other pieces need to be in place to optimize the benefit.

Carbon capture comes from planting more trees and not just leaving them there, but cutting them down when their growth rate slows and planting new ones.

Creating the bio char is a byproduct of using the plant mass to heat water for the district heating system, which is an extremely efficient method of heating homes and businesses.

Biochar as a byproduct, in contrast to landfill or burning in an oxygen rich environment comes from a method where carbon release is minimized. In landfills, it’s methane. In fire, it’s carbon dioxide.

You can advocate for local solutions! The magic here is that they found a mix that works well for local conditions. Your city or town may already be looking at things like this. If they publish a master plan or other planning documents they may include things on energy, waste, climate change, etc. They usually aren’t too detailed, but can point you to other things to look at.

  • That is my understanding as well. My hangup was that I understood this to be untrue, at least in a literal sense, because you can be on a ballot without belonging to the two mainstream parties.

What wasn’t clicking is what the message of the comic was. I now understand that the comic is shown from the point of view of someone who believes in the “blue no matter who” approach. Their opposition is shown as irrational, magical thinking, not seeing the difficult decision the rational person is facing, seeking to distract them by pointing out an option that isn’t possible.

The reader is supposed to view this as absurd, because it is. How can you at once be a bystander, but given this great responsibility. Is that your only involvement? Showing up every two years and picking a colour? There are not only two tracks. You don’t need a constitutional amendment or some other Herculean effort to have other candidates running. You can just do it! (Let’s put aside discussion of reform vs abolition for now, comrade, I’m looking at baby steps).

Anyways, I came to that conclusion from this text on the artist’s website:

Collectively organizing to derail the train and/or build a bridge towards the third track is the only ethical solution by the way, but it takes time and effort, so let’s get started.

Another commenter has a different interpretation of the artists intent, but I don’t think I looked at the same things they did so I’m not seeking to disagree with them.

  • These issues sound like not being familiar with mechanics common to a certain type of game. I have horrific ADHD and I spend an embarrassing amount of time playing video games, but I hate some of the things and genres you mention, so I wouldn’t have had a great time either.

The primary deficits I have are with working memory and executive function. Platformers are a fucking nightmare if you don’t have working memory. The executive function challenge makes games with rigid tactics and paths not very fun. I hate controllers, it’s unintuitive. That might just be because I’ve been gaming on a PC for nearly 30 years 🫣

What kinds of games do I like? Going off my Steam play time: the fallout games, for some reason I really liked TF2 but probably because it is silly and my friends were playing it so would play together. Satisfactory, Cities Skylines, Transport Fever, Tropico, Dawn of War, supermarket simulator (lol). I’ve been playing Roller Coaster Tycoon on my phone lately (DID YOU KNOW YOU COULD DO THAT? ITS THE FUTURE!)

So games with many paths and not a constant sense of urgency. Games are escapism for me.

My spouse who also has ADHD is very comfortable with a controller and loves games where he has to figure out the “trick” behind beating bosses. He loves rouge - like games and gets obsessive with dark souls and that whole genre. He just finished the latest Control. He loves to experience mechanics and level design and appreciates and analyzes games as art. He doesn’t mind putting in effort to get that payoff, whereas I want a break from effort and the chance to explore at my own pace.

Is the third track an analogy for third party candidates? Does that imply that it is literally impossible to vote for them ( i.e. not connected)?

Eta: whoops I clicked the link and figured it out. It is making fun of the idea that there are only two tracks. Makes so much more sense. 😅

  • I don’t think that’s the case. It’s a fairly easy thing for them to do (i.e. they just tell other people to do it and it’s not their problem anymore) but will win points with the president and divert attention from whatever fuckery they are up to. Alternatively, there is a non zero chance that he’ll forget about it in a few weeks anyways, so maybe they don’t even have to do anything.

The tech bros don’t give a fuck if the unwashed masses think they are sycophants. Have any of them faced real backlash for it yet? People say mean things about them, sure. But it doesn’t effect their wealth or power.

  • It’s easy to forget the mass panic around hackers in the 80s and 90s! It wasn’t a letter from your ISP telling you to cut that shit out (pirating).

Kevin Mitnick got sentenced to a year in jail accessing an internal network of a company, and transferring the source code of their software. As far as I understand he didn’t extort the company, threaten them, or release the files. The hack was in 1979 and he was charged in 1988.

The Free Kevin movement in the late 90s (for his later arrest) really created this environment where people pushing back on how blown out of proportion the criminal charges were helped popularize the idea of white hat hacking. If I recall correctly it started as individuals advertising their services for pen testing, etc, and approaching companies with their discoveries hoping for a pay out. I’m sure the big bounty system was just a more efficient way for companies to get this same service without having to hire someone do the testing. They only pay for results. The benefit to the hacker is there is much less risk of being accused of blackmail or hit with charges for admitting to the hack if they cold-approach a company.

  • Agree with the revolutionary access to simple computers for hobbyists.

I haven’t used them much myself but now that I am thinking more about automation at home I’m realizing there are much cheaper and safer (lower current) options for things I want to achieve as compared to electronic or electromechanical control systems I am familiar with from industrial settings.

I think Raspberry Pi played a big part in creating the environment where there was a market for all this other innovation.
